A Team Approach

“I proved to myself that I can do anything I put my mind to.”

Carlan Brown

Carlan Brown
Compiled by Amy Meadows

Carlan Brown’s transformation began because of a wedding. Not her own wedding—it was that of a friend, who really wowed Carlan with her appearance during the nuptials. “She looked amazing for her special day, and I wanted to look like that,” she recalls. “I was unhappy with the way I looked. I was tired of being fat, and I was ready to make a change.” When the bride explained that she had hired a personal trainer at House of Payne Personal Training, Carlan knew exactly where to go. She began driving from Buckhead to Lilburn five to six days a week to work with trainers Rachel and Steve Payne, who designed an all-natural diet and strength training program to help her create a “sculpted, toned and sexy shape.” With her trainers’ help, she learned how to make healthy food choices and eat six meals a day, each one including protein. She also mastered portion control and drank up to a gallon of water a day, all while working with free weights and doing cardio sprints and intervals throughout the week to get the physical form she desired. Carlan ultimately reached her goal in 18 months, losing 55 pounds, 42 inches, 40 percent of her body fat and five dress sizes. She even took on her first half-marathon on Thanksgiving Day 2010. “Making this transformation has been a great experience for me,” she says. “I proved to myself that I can do anything I put my mind to.” More importantly, though, she realized that she could turn to—and depend on—the people around her for encouragement as she faced the challenges before her. “I had a great support system—not only from all of the trainers at House of Payne Personal Training, but also from my family and friends,” she concludes. “It truly was and is a team approach.”

Veteran’s Victory

“[People] are shocked to see how much weight I’ve lost, and that’s a great motivational feeling.”

Ray JonesRay J. Jones, Jr.
Compiled by Lesley Parks

After serving 30 years in the U.S. Army and 10 years with the Department of Labor, the U.S. Senate and the House of Representatives, Ray J. Jones, Jr. sat on his front porch every night, watching young people pass by and reminiscing about his own youth. His weight had risen to 325 pounds, causing many health problems such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnea and knee pain. He was on the brink of becoming diabetic. After an emotional meeting with his doctor, it became imminently clear that he needed to seek a weight loss program quickly. After trying a popular weight loss program with little success, he met Jenny Craig counselor Carrie Jones, who guided him to a 100-pound weight loss. His doctor took him off all medications associated with his weight gain, and he now volunteers his time at the Atlanta VA Medical Center, travels and enjoys time with his grandchildren. “When my friends and people in general see me, they are shocked to see how much weight I’ve lost, and that’s a great motivational feeling,” Ray says. “Life is good, and Jenny Craig has changed my life.”

A New Attitude

“I love the energy I have each day for work and for my kids. I love who I am today.”

Colleen AllenColleen Allen
Compiled by Amy Meadows

Colleen Allen always saw herself as “the heavy girl.” But in 2002, with only one year until her wedding, she decided that enough was enough when she tipped the scales at 255 pounds. In addition to walking, she began the Weight Watchers program with her mother and stepfather and lost 80 pounds before she walked down the aisle to her husband, Jason. Over the next several years, Colleen’s weight fluctuated, especially as she focused on her teaching career and the birth of her two children, Brett and Johannah. But, in 2009, after she finished nursing her daughter, she recalls, “I was ready to lose the rest of the weight—for me and for my children.” She turned once again to Weight Watchers, using the program’s books and online tools to change her eating habits. When she reached 160 pounds, she began exercising in earnest again with FitTV’s various programming and the Gilad: Total Body Sculpt Workout series on DVD. Today, after an 8-year journey, Colleen is a svelte and healthy 130 pounds. “I never thought I would be this weight or this size, but it works for me. And I love the energy I have each day for work and for my kids,” she says. “I love who I am today.”

Breaking the Cycle

“I went from sitting on the couch to running in races!”

Melanie SteinMelanie Stein
Compiled by Amy Meadows

Like many women, Melanie Stein began to gain weight in her late 30s after her first pregnancy. She was very cognizant of the possible health problems she faced, particularly when her father passed away after a long illness with heart disease and diabetes. “I knew I would develop the same health issues if I did not take control of my health,” she says. In fact, at 240 pounds, she already had high cholesterol, anemia and acid reflux. Yet, with a busy life and family, she spent little time taking care of herself. Melanie had tried Jenny Craig in 2000 but quit before reaching her goal weight. By April of 2009, she was ready to try again. “I knew with the Jenny Craig program that I would have three delicious meals and two snacks daily, and they would provide me with the tools to handle social situations and still lose weight,” she explains, adding that she started walking around her neighborhood and doing water aerobics to get into shape. After losing 20 pounds, she wanted to try running and turned to the Couch to 5K podcasts for inspiration. Now age 50 and down to 172 pounds (and still losing), she will tackle her first half-marathon in January 2011. And she has since added belly dancing, Latin cardio and spinning to her exercise regimen. What’s more, her cholesterol is normal and she feels in control of her well being, happily saying, “I went from sitting on the couch to running in races!”

Healthier for Life

“I feel 20 years younger! Oh, I'm still aging—but at a reasonable pace.”

Gregg EdwardsGregg Edwards
Compiled by Tara Duttenhaver

In the spring of 2009, at the age of 61, Gregg Edwards’ doctor told him he needed to lose 20 pounds. Gregg was then referred to Steve and Lisa Collett at Enhancing Health. After a fitness assessment, Gregg enrolled in the Take Shape for Life program at Enhancing Health, a medical nutrition program that combines healthy eating with exercise. With a lot of hard work, Gregg was able to drop his weight from 189 pounds to 155 pounds in 4 months. Also, his blood pressure has dropped significantly, his acid reflux has greatly improved and his cholesterol level, which started at 143, has dropped to 116. Even better, he was able to reduce the dosages on several medications he was taking daily, making him an all-around healthier man. “I feel 20 years younger!” Gregg says, “Oh, I'm still aging—but at a reasonable pace.

Birthday Benchmark

“I literally walked my weight off one step at a time. The credit all goes to healthy living, sheer determination and Weight Watchers.”

Sara CorcoranSara Corcoran
Compiled by Tara Duttenhaver

Sara Corcoran struggled with obesity for the better part of 25 years. After seeing pictures from her 40th birthday, she decided to do something about it. Making the commitment to herself not to quit, no matter what, she worked hard and fought the battle to lose 114 pounds. On her way to this loss, she learned that it wasn’t about depriving herself from the things she couldn’t have—it was more about identifying and enjoying the things that she could have. Seeing and feeling the gradual change in her body continued to motivate her on her way down the scale. Today she is fit and fabulous and maintains her new, healthy weight by eating right and walking. Sara’s regimen was simple enough for anyone to follow: “There was no gym or personal trainer. No supplements or weight loss surgery. No boot camp or fitness classes. I literally walked my weight off, one step at a time. The credit all goes to healthy living, sheer determination and Weight Watchers.” She has kept the weight off for 4 years and attributes this to being active and, most of all, keeping a healthy perspective on the fact that she will have to be accountable every day for her nutrition and lifestyle choices in order to maintain the remarkable weight loss that she achieved.

Total Health Turnaround

“Each part was a milestone and achievement.”

Ed FrankowskiEd Frankowski
Compiled by Tara Duttenhaver

Ed Frankowski, 56, was living with a host of chronic medical issues, including diabetes and hypertension, for which he was taking an array of medications. In May 2010, Ed spent a weekend at Jobri Center for Integrative Health, after being invited by his physician, Kimball Johnson, MD. Ed realized he needed to make a real life change. “I don't reflect on any one measurable accomplishment since there are many in how I feel and look. Each part was a milestone and achievement,” he says. As a result of his experience at the Jobri Center, which included intensive detox, exercise and education on how to live a healthier lifestyle, Ed has had an amazing turnaround in his health. His triglyceride levels dropped significantly after 6 weeks, while his total cholesterol fell drastically.  His blood pressure and daily blood glucose levels were also lowered dramatically.  Ed has lost more than 25 pounds and, for the first time in years, he has the energy to exercise regularly and has also been able to reduce and eliminate some of his prescription medications.

A Proud Loser

“At 45 years old, making big changes is not easy, but I've gone from seriously unhealthy to athlete in the space of 20 months.”

Rebecca BarnesRebecca Barnes
Compiled by Amy Meadows

In February 2009, Rebecca Barnes weighed 225 pounds. Standing just over 5 feet tall, she realized that it was not a healthy weight for her small frame. What was worse, though, was her state of mind. “It wasn't just the image in the mirror that disturbed me,” she says. “It was the fact that I started walking into a room and taking stock of whether I was the fattest woman there. Often the answer was yes, but it was the fact that I was asking that question that really told me I was in bad shape mentally and physically.” When she saw the call for the Atlanta’s Biggest Loser competition sponsored by WXIA, her interest was piqued. She had tried other weight loss plans in the past, but nothing had worked. After applying and going through an extensive interview process, Rebecca was chosen from a field of more than 900 people as one of 12 contestants. She began working out with contest-supplied trainer Coach Sule Welch of The Welch Martial Art Experience and dining on meals prepared by Good Measure Meals. During the contest, she lost 39 pounds. Since the competition ended, she has continued living the lessons she learned and lost a total of 90 pounds. She also has gained more lean muscle than ever before and boasts “cut arms” and impressive abs. She celebrated and accented her transformation with a great new hairstyle by Trevor Garner of Relish Salon. “At 45 years old, making big changes is not easy, but I've gone from seriously unhealthy to athlete in the space of 20 months,” she says. “I am proud!”

Pet Project

“When my childhood dog (and best friend) Ruby passed away my senior year in high school, I realized how real the animal-human connection is.”

Jan FowlerJan Fowler
Compiled by Tara Duttenhaver

For more than 10 years, Jan Fowler was a hairstylist at a top Atlanta salon. In 2008, she developed a life-threatening allergy to some of the styling products she used daily at her job. Doctors told her that her profession would eventually kill her if she went back. This sent Jan into a bleak period, during which she struggled to overcome the loss of her career. While on the hunt for a new job, Jan began walking neighborhood dogs to earn a little extra money. It was during this time that the idea came to her to start up her own dog walking business, which grew out of her illness as well as the love she has always had for animals. “I have been in love with animals since I was a child,” Jan says. “When my childhood dog (and best friend) Ruby passed away my senior year in high school, I realized how real the animal-human connection is.” Now she’s the owner of Pets and the Sity, a dog walking and pet sitting company employing six specifically trained dog walkers. Had she not gone through her terrible health struggle, she may not have realized her true passion and purpose in life.

The Winner Takes It All

“I'm taking a few extra minutes every day to make sure I'm ready to go and properly accessorized.”

Kathy PowellKathy Powell
Compiled by Amy Meadows

Kathy Powell’s transformation didn’t happen overnight. In fact, it actually occurred in several parts. The first part involved a 14-month journey to lose weight, which resulted in the 27-year-old marketing director going from a size 14 to a size 6 and creating a beautiful body with muscle definition, as well as a life full of energy. Not quite knowing what to do with or how to dress her new physique, Kathy entered—and won—the Sophie Made Me Do It! Makeover Contest, presented by Karen Hughes, founder of ImageAssets and StyleCAMP, in early 2010. Her personal essay detailing her initial transformation spoke to Hughes, who was thrilled to offer Kathy free admission to StyleCAMP, an interactive workshop that is designed to help women understand and learn the basics of style. Through the experience, Kathy discovered her style personality and made significant changes in the way she approaches her appearance. For starters, after a consultation with Alyson Hoag of Authentic Beauty, she now wears makeup every day. What’s more, she learned how to select the right clothes and accessories for herself. Kathy now not only looks great, but also feels fantastic. She concludes, “I'm taking a few extra minutes every day to make sure I'm ready to go and properly accessorized, and I’m actually doing my hair and makeup before I leave the house—all little steps that have become part of my routine and go a long way to making me look my age and show that I take myself seriously, so others should too.”

The Happy Dance

“I’m now energized and, most importantly, I feel sexy and good about myself.
I’m a new woman and my husband and I have never been happier.”

Karyna BuschKaryna Busch
Compiled by Tara Duttenhaver

For Karyna Busch and her husband, the birth of their daughter brought unprecedented joy. However, it also brought along some new feelings for Karyna that she hadn’t experienced before, including irritability, low energy, low motivation and a diminished sex drive. Searching for solutions, she joined the Valeo Dance & Health Club and started to change her life. She began taking classes and found that they were not only fun, but also great for her mental and physical health. “It was a physical and mental break for me,” she says. “I had so much fun dancing Ballroom Fit with all the easy to follow cha-cha and samba moves. I started noticing that certain areas of my body were toning up. I’m now energized and, most importantly, I feel sexy and good about myself. I’m a new woman and my husband and I have never been happier.”

Strength in the Bank

“Put as much strength as possible in the bank because [you] will surely be drawing on those reserves later.”

Andrew SwartAndrew Swart
Compiled by Amy Meadows

Andrew Swart was in his early 60s when he and his wife, Priscilla, began going to the local gym near their home three times a week. He was prompted to improve his health and fitness level when he noticed that his slacks had to be let out in the waist and that his daughter, Jenny, had commented on her father being “a little frail.” After several years, the results of his regular workouts were quite noticeable to family and friends, as well as to a trainer at the gym who suggested that he consider competing in the Super Grand Master category (over 70) of one of the many bodybuilding competitions held in Georgia each year. “I was in good shape for my age, and he said that if I trained a bit more, I stood a reasonable chance of receiving an award,” says Andrew, now 75. With the possibility in mind, he sought out the help of certified personal trainer Kala Duncan. She worked with Andrew to develop a dietary plan to help him prepare for competition and a training regimen that would build muscle definition and body symmetry with some targeted muscle addition in under-developed areas. And while he is still deciding which competition to enter this year, he continues to maintain his challenging workout routine. “I don't see my story as being a typical before-and-after scenario,” Andrew says, “but rather as a positive message to encourage seniors to see their 60s as the time to build themselves up and put as much strength as possible in the bank because they will surely be drawing on those reserves later.”

Jenny Loves Jenny

“The strength, vitality and joy of life I have reclaimed can't be measured.”

Jenny CooperJenny Cooper
Compiled by Lesley Parks

At the prompt of her loving husband, Jenny Cooper ended her 5-year "pity party" one early fall day in 2009. After a series of health issues, including a broken foot, Lasik eye surgery, a diagnosis of uritis, glaucoma and two more eye surgeries, she found herself uncharacteristically on the sidelines. As her health and strength began to fade even more, she was faced with the truth that she was not treating herself well. She joined Jenny Craig and purchased THE FIRM WAVE rocking motion fitness tool. The delicious Jenny Craig food, her consultant and the bonus of not having to worry about what she would eat made the weight loss easy, and she slowly and steadily dropped the pounds. She was able to run 5 1/2 miles of the Peachtree Road Race (a family tradition) with little prep. “The benefits of taking control of my life and health are priceless,” Cooper says. “The strength, vitality and joy of life I have reclaimed can't be measured. I am able to love others more now, as I now know how to love myself. And you just can't beat the honeymoon quality of my marriage after 38 years!"

As Steve Freund aged, he was, in his words “feeling lousy and looking pretty terrible.” He knew he had to do something, but none of the classic methods were working. The cycle continued until he saw an ad for Fitness Together. He loved their philosophy: “One Client, One Trainer, One Goal.” From the moment Steve walked in, he knew Fitness Together was what he needed. “The staff immediately made me feel comfortable and welcome,” he says. “Now when I come in to train, I feel like I’m with my second family.” The Fitness Together approach is tailored to each client’s needs. “They listen to me and my goals and even are sensitive to the mental aspects of reconditioning your mind and body to love to live in a healthy way,” Steve says. “And it’s fun! That’s one of the most important parts. I just love it!”

A mother of two, Terrie Hawkins felt unhealthy and unhappy not being able to do everything she wanted with her children because of her weight. She made a decision that changed all of their lives by signing up for Jenny Craig. Motivated by her desire to be an inspiration and example for her family, as well as a desire to get back into her size 6 jeans, Terrie quickly adapted to living a healthier lifestyle. By adopting a new diet and building up her exercise regimen from walking to running 10Ks, Terrie went from 179 pounds to 137.8 pounds. Terrie says, “I feel like a new me—empowered to do whatever comes my way!” She now works as a Jenny Craig weight loss consultant, telling her story to others going through some of the same challenges she faced.

Holistic Healing

“My thinking is clear and I am a happier person.”

Janet SchultzJanet Schultz
Compiled by Lesley Parks

Janet Schultz was highly allergic to everyday chemicals and fragrances and suffered countless health problems related to her allergies. Between prescription and over-the counter drugs, at one point she was on 17 medications. Finally, after landing in the hospital twice in one week due to life-threatening drug interactions, she realized that this was no way to live. She began to integrate organic, low glycemic index whole foods into her diet, use green cleaning products and eliminate synthetic chemicals from all of her home and personal care products. From chiropractic adjustments to self-hypnosis techniques, she researched and explored what holistic healing really means—including the mind-body connection and the importance of spirituality. She now uses her own experiences and knowledge of holistic healing to help others improve their health and lives naturally through her website, www.organicjanet.com. “I went from slogging through life, bleary and irritable to gliding through life easily and happily,” Janet says. “My thinking is clear and I am a happier person: more calm, joyful and grateful, and more spiritually aware than ever before.”

Natasha ColemanFrom Trainee to Trainer

“I am an example to my clients and others that with a positive mindset, anything is possible.”

Natasha Coleman
Compiled by Lesley Parks

Natasha Coleman was an athlete involved in sports all her life. But once she completed college and began climbing the corporate ladder, working out took a back seat to her career. Four years and nearly 40 pounds later, she realized that she needed to get her body back in shape. After about 6 months of exercising on her own at a gym, she decided that in order to be successful, she needed some consistency and accountability, so she enrolled in boot camp at OPT Fitness in Smyrna. The training style of Master Trainer Derek Taylor challenged her not only physically, but mentally as well. “He taught me to always be positive and believe in myself,” Natasha says. She is now an NGA Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Boot Camp Instructor. “Losing weight and becoming fit is about making meaningful lifestyle changes,” she says. “By using this methodology, I enable my clients to achieve their fitness goals. Having lost and kept off over 30 pounds myself, I am an example to my clients and others that with a positive mindset, anything is possible. The Power of Pilates

“I’m stronger and more flexible. In terms of exercise, it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.”

Peggy MoorePeggy Moore
Compiled by Amy Meadows

When Peggy Moore took her first Pilates class, she thought to herself, “This is ridiculous.” An avid tennis player and recreational athlete, she was used to participating in sports that required a lot of motion. However, because her well-meaning friends would not stop “nagging” her about trying the popular mind-body exercise, 65-year-old Peggy found herself at the Body Awareness Studio in Atlanta. Four years later, she is thrilled that she did, as her initial impression of the challenging workout was completely wrong. “Pilates at Body Awareness Studio has changed my life,” she reveals. “With the exercises and the many tools that I've learned, I’m stronger and more flexible. In terms of exercise, it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me.” In fact, Peggy, who works closely with studio founder Leslie Clayton, found that Pilates has not only made her body tighter and firmer, but she also has been able to alleviate the back pain that plagued her for years. Pilates also provided her with a much-needed physical and emotional outlet as she cared for her ailing husband, Bill, who suffered from dementia and the effects of a head injury. And since his passing in March, she has been able to turn to the fitness method for comfort and a sense of focus. Peggy typically practices three times a week and has no plans to slow down. “Taking up Pilates has been a very positive experience,” she says. “And this is an exercise that I can do for the rest of my life.”

Jennifer Johnson is an on-the-go, busy woman. So when it was time for a hairstyle change, she wanted to spend the least amount of time as possible maintaining her style on a daily basis. Her Carter Barnes Hair Artisans stylist, Marc Moss, chose a soft, modern bob for her, creating layers throughout the whole cut. For her color, Moss used L’Oreal’s INOA ammonia-free color line to make her hair a darker, richer color.
