After suffering a shoulder injury that left her with poor posture and in constant pain, Allison Stone began practicing Pilates. The former Wall Street executive found herself in the best physical condition of her life and wanted to share her positive experience with others. Stone received her Pilates teaching certification and instructed for 2 years before realizing her dream of opening The Core, A Pilates Studio. Stone offers individualized Pilates instruction to clients in group settings or one on one.
What do you see as the keys to being your “best self”?
To be your best self, you need to live each day fully and honestly, being grateful for all the good things in your life. Do something every day that makes you feel good. Love yourself.
What’s your favorite part of your career?
I love working directly with my clients and seeing the changes they are making to become healthier and stronger through Pilates.
Your least favorite?
I wish I could teach every class and work with each client every day. Although I have put together a great team at The Core, A Pilates Studio and we take pride in building relationships with our clients, I would still love to be the one doing the teaching.
How did you come to this point in your career?
Like many people, I spent much of my life in the corporate world and dreamed of the career and lifestyle I’m living today. It was through hard work and self confidence that I was able to turn adverse situations into a positive ones, thus making my dream of teaching Pilates a reality.
What special challenges do you face as a business owner in your field?
Many people come in and want to see changes right away. Bodies don’t change overnight; it takes hard work and dedication. I am always encouraging people to keep working even when they may not be seeing the results and changes as quickly as they want.
What’s the hardest lesson you’ve ever learned?
There are really two. The first one is to keep going in the face of adversity. The other is to budget my time so that I don’t burn out.
What has been your greatest achievement?
There is nothing in business and life like helping your baby grow. Raising my son into a fine young man able to stand on his own two feet is an achievement I’ll always cherish. Opening The Core, A Pilates Studio and watching it grow is like having another child that I’m equally as proud of.
What’s your top fitness and health secret?
I have been doing Pilates for 10 years, and it has been so very beneficial when coupled with eating a well balanced diet. I try to never overindulge—moderation is key.
What are the keys to your health regimen?
Pilates and keeping a positive mental attitude.
What’s your favorite getaway destination/activity?
I grew up near the ocean, and I find that being on the beach, listening to the ocean, always relaxes me.
What is the best gift you’ve ever received?
To be able to live my dream by opening my studio and sharing my passion for Pilates with others.
