2019 OVER 40 & FABULOUS! ADVISORY BOARD: Hormone Replacement Therapy—Dr. Naureen Adam and Dr. Nazanin Jafarian of MD Radiance Aesthetics and Wellness

Radiance MDBy getting to the root of hormonal imbalances caused, Dr. Naureen Adam and Dr. Nazanin Jafarian are helping men and women feel their best.

Did you always know you wanted to be in this field? What inspired you to pursue this path?

Dr. Adam: I knew I wanted to be a physician since I was a teenager. In medical school, I decided to go into anesthesia and ultimately interventional pain medicine. The theme was making people feel better and enabling them to do the things they wanted to do without pain. From there, for Dr. Jafarian and I, it became directly related to, ‘OK, let’s go a step beyond traditional pain medicine and see what we can do to make people feel better from the inside.’

Dr. Jafarian: As an anesthesiologist and interventional pain physician, I saw my patients suffer from chronic diseases. As we age, our hormones decrease and our medical problems increase and I knew there was a safer and more natural solution to help patients regain their vitality and slow the aging process.

What is one thing that challenges you most about your industry?

Dr. Adam: Educating people is a large part of what we do. The average person does not know that hormone changes do happen over 30 and you can fix them. For example, one of my former personal trainers, who is 36 years old, called me saying, ‘I just don’t have the vigor and the drive I used to have. I’m just not as clear [mentally].’ You think this is something that happens at 40 or 50 but here’s somebody that was the perfect example. He works out every day and he doesn’t feel as good as he used to and it’s likely due to a decline in his testosterone levels.

Dr. Jafarian: Each patient is unique and developing a customized treatment plan for everyone is challenging but that is what will provide the best results. Our treatment plans allow us to fine-tune your body to perform optimally. When your hormones are balanced, you are reaching your body’s full potential. I enjoy the challenge because nothing is more gratifying than seeing my patients discover a new lease on life. As Deepak Chopra said, “If we are creating ourselves all the time, then it is never too late to begin creating the bodies we want, instead of the ones we mistakenly assume we are stuck with.”

Signs Your Hormones May Be Out of Balance

Men:

  • Don’t have the zest for life they used to
  • Decreased libido
  • Less energy during the day
  • Decreased mental clarity
  • Irritability

Women:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Sometimes there are menopausal symptoms like hot flashes
  • Decreased drive
  • Decreased libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Decreased energy

Dr. Adam: There’s some overlap, but as you get older and you start to experience these things, it’s a sign to investigate further.
