Q: I can feel my knee stiffen and “creak” when I climb stairs sometimes. What causes this? Is there anything I can do to prevent this?
A: Depending on your age, the “creaking” may be due to some mild wear and tear behind your knee cap. This is very common and not always painful. A low-impact regular exercise program including strengthening your legs and maintaining your ideal body weight will often help. Running, squats and lunges can sometimes aggravate the problem. Talk to your doctor if the condition is getting progressively worse or if you notice swelling or increasing pain.
