Ask the Doctor – Nov. 19, 2010

Q: I’ve heard news about robotic surgeries becoming more mainstream. How safe are robotic surgeries?

A: It’s very safe. Despite its name, your surgeon still controls every aspect of your care. The superior quality of the HD video enhances the surgeon’s skills by improving depth perception, contrast and magnification. The flexibility of the robotic instruments provides greater range of motion than possible with traditional laparoscopic instruments. Patients thereby benefit from smaller incisions, less pain and scarring, reduced blood loss and need for transfusions, shorter hospital stays, quicker recoveries and reduced risk of infection.
