The scoop on what’s new around Atlanta
Go Green in Your Closet
Think beyond just the grocery store – now your clothes can be organic too! BeGood, a clothing brand that launched this summer, produces garments using organic cotton and other naturally occurring fibers like silk and bamboo. The clothes’ colors come from non-toxic dyes, and most of their textile mills are Global Organic Textile Standard certified. To offset their environmental impact even further, BeGood partners with the nonprofit group Evidence Action to donate 12 gallons of clean drinking water across Kenya and Uganda for each piece sold. These responsible garments start at just $15, and BeGood’s fall line is available online now.
Cycle Your Way to Health
Currently, six out of 10 Atlanta residents are overweight or obese. My City Bikes, a national public health initiative, has partnered with the local store Fresh Bike Service to help change those numbers. Together they launched the free Atlanta Bikes app, which serves as a guide to Atlanta’s cycling community. It’s built specifically for Atlanta and includes information on road, mountain, recreational and commuter biking in and around our city. The app is available now for Apple and Android.
2nd Annual Moustache Dash 5K/1M
After a breast cancer-focused October, male-centric “Movember” will take the stage, encouraging men to grow moustaches throughout the month. This humorous rebranding of the month “November” is intended to raise awareness for men’s health issues like prostate and testicular cancer. Show your mustachioed support at Best Self Atlanta’s family-friendly Moustache Dash race, which includes 5K and 1-mile options starting from the intersection of Peachtree Road and Piedmont Road. The pre-race activities include free stick-on moustaches, prostate cancer education, a health expo and group warm-up, and post-race festivities include free food and awards.
Beer of the Legends
The local brewery Orpheus Brewing keeps your beer-tasting experience close to home and, simultaneously, steeped in tradition. Their name and philosophy draw from Greek mythology, but their flavors are cutting edge. Brewmaster Jason Pellett says, “We’re creating flavors that you can’t find elsewhere, and beers I’d actually want to drink.” Recently they unveiled a new brew called Lyric Ale, which joins the beer Atalanta as the second option available year-round. To try these and their seasonal offerings, head to the Orpheus Tasting Room, which overlooks Piedmont Park and the Beltline.
