What is a rotator cuff tear of the shoulder?
The rotator cuff comprises of a group of four muscle tendon units that wrap around the shoulder joint. Most rotator cuff tears are caused by constant stress and wear from doing the same activity over and over. Rotator cuff tears may be partial or complete. Common symptoms include weakness, pain at night and pain that worsens with activities, especially when using one’s arm over one’s head. Partial tears may be treated by cortisone injections and physical therapy, while complete tears are usually treated with surgical repair.
