Best Rx: North Atlanta Dermatology – Treating poison ivy

Damian DharAtlanta’s local doctors provide answers to all your medical questions. One Best Self reader asked: Can I treat poison ivy at home or do I need to see a doctor?

Damian Dhar, MD of North Atlanta Dermatology: There are several at-home remedies for treating poison ivy. Remedies you can try yourself include rinsing your skin right away with lukewarm water. You can also take an oatmeal bath or apply a paste of baking soda or calamine lotion to soothe the itching. But if you have a serious reaction, it’s best to see your dermatologist who may prescribe a steroid ointment. To treat a severe case, a strong medicine like prednisone may be necessary.
