Dr. Margarett C. Ellison from North Fulton Women’s Oncology answers a reader’s question about ovarian cancer.
Q: I got my annual Pap test, and all was normal. Do I still need to worry about ovarian cancer?
Pap tests only screen for cervical cancer. There are currently no screening tests for ovarian cancer, and unfortunately only about 20 percent of ovarian cancers are diagnosed at an early stage. The best way to find ovarian cancer is to see your gynecologist annually for a pelvic exam and to see your provider if you experience the following symptoms for two weeks or more: abdominal swelling or bloating, pelvic pressure, abdominal pain, feeling full quickly, urinary urgency or urinary frequency.
