One Best Self reader asked: I have extremely dark circles under my eyes. What causes them, and what can I do about them?
Mike Majmundar, MD of Northside Facial Cosmetic Surgery says: The most common causes of dark circles are lower eyelid puffiness and under-eye volume loss. Less common causes are skin pigmentation issues and an excess of blood vessels. Lower eyelid puffiness and volume loss can be camouflaged with a filler treatment placed under the lower lid. The filler is a quick, 10-minute procedure that replaces volume lost below the puffy areas, which helps them appear less prominent. The filler does have to be repeated every so often. A more permanent solution is a blepharoplasty. During this 45-minute procedure, excess puffiness is removed and, if needed, can be “transplanted” onto the bone below.
