Depending on what diet you’re doing or whatever change you make to your lifestyle you could be counting calories, weighing food, omitting certain types of food, or all of the above plus more. A major thing that knocks people off their diet-wagon is cravings. Whether it be a craving for salt, something sweet, or a soda – we all have that certain food or drink that you long for after a stressful day at work. But food cravings can make or break a weight loss regimen. One of our readers wrote in asking “My biggest struggle in losing weight is controlling my food cravings. What can I do to increase my willpower to help me lose weight?” We called on expert Stephanie Rimka, DC of Brain and Body Solutions, LLC for an answer:
“Food cravings are often driven by one of three things: a true nutritional need, an addictive trigger from an allergen or toxin or anxiety from an unresolved emotional issue. These all play a vital role in creating what we call “willpower.” Addressing all aspects in a holistic model is a key component to a weight loss lifestyle change plan. Eat a fresh, whole foods diet limiting toxins and chemicals, get tested for food sensitivities or allergies and find a method for reducing the anxiety driving the emotional food choices such as talk therapy, meditation or neurofeedback.”
