As you watch the summer Olympics in London, be on the lookout for these Olympic athletes who hail from the Atlanta area, and give them a few extra cheers. There are 20 Olympic athletes who either call Atlanta their home or attended college in the area.
Atlanta is represented well in the swimming and diving arena. Seven Atlanta athletes will compete in the summer Olympics, including Eric Shanteau, Kathleen Hersey, Andrew Gemmell, Shannon Vreeland, Amanda Weir, Kara Lynn Joyce, Allison Schmitt and Chris Colwill.
Two-time Olympian and head coach for SCAD Atlanta’s cross country team, Avard Moncur, will participate at this year’s summer Olympics in London as well. Moncur will compete in the 4×400-meter relay for the Bahamas.
Track and Field Olympic athletes include George Kitchens Jr., Christian Taylor, Reese Hoffa, Aries Merritt, Chaunte Lowe, Hyleas Fountain and Angelo Taylor. Angelo Taylor, winner of the 400-meter hurdles at the 2000 and 2008 Summer Olympics, will be looking to reclaim his title. Don’t miss the American women’s high jump record holder Chaunte Lowe as she leaps to what looks like gravity defying heights in her event.
Three Atlanta representatives will compete in canoeing: Erick Hurd, Tim Hornsby and Jeff Larimer. Other athletes include Angel McCoughtry in basketball and John Isner in tennis.
