At the Rio Olympics, several U.S. athletes sported the distinctive round mark of an alternative pain management treatment called “cupping.” Cups placed on the body are then heated or pumped with air to create a vacuum that pulls the skin into the cup. “The pulling action engages the parasympathetic nervous system, thus allowing a deeper relaxation to move throughout the entire body,” says Beth O’Connor esthetician and massage therapist at CentreSpringMD + Spa Brookhaven.
