Founder and Editor of Atlanta Trails Eric Champlin shares his best advice when hiking with your pet.
Why should dog owners bring their pet hiking with them?
Just like us, most dogs love an adventure! With so many new sights, sounds and smells, a great afternoon hike can be as much fun for your dog as you.
Which dogs are best suited for this activity?
Dog breeds vary in size and athletic ability, but they all need exercise. If your dog is new to hiking, explore a few easy, short trails before working up to more difficult and longer trails. Pack a water dish and water bottle to keep them hydrated.
What are you favorite trails to bring your own dog?
Sweetwater Creek State Park offers a great canine adventure just outside the I-285 perimeter on Atlanta’s west side. Sweetwater Creek’s four trails range in difficulty and length and explore a beautiful creek valley filled with whitewater rapids, small waterfalls and the ruins of a Civil War-era mill. Or check out Arabia Mountain on Atlanta’s east side, with trails that scale a mountain summit for stunning views.
