Picking up the newspaper today or logging onto a news site is quite a gamble these days. Sure, you may find information on what movies are breaking bank at the box office, or what the weather holds for the upcoming week. But, you’re also sure to see lots of news… lots of negative, tragic, draining news. Whether it’s happening here in our backyards, or across the world, let’s face it, there’s a lot of ‘stuff’ being reported on, and much of the time, it’s not the happy, fluffy kind.
Fortunately, we have ways to help. Right here in Atlanta, Georgia, Give a Lift Foundation (GALF) took formation about 1.5 years ago. The mission of the organization is bold… yet simple. It’s an organization dedicated to eradicating poverty. We’re not trying to make water from chocolate, not trying to build a fancy theme park. Just wanting to help people who live below the poverty line to be lifted up above it. And to be able to sustain themselves and prosper on their own.
The statistics are nothing short of staggering. In GA, 1 out of 5 children live in poverty. In Atlanta, 1 out of 3 children live in poverty. Not acceptable. To date, GALF has positively impacted over 260 individuals living in poverty, including over 145 children. Over $30,000 worth of GALF food vouchers have supported 60 families for their basic food needs. One other amazing statistic – GALF‘s operating expenses remain at less than 1% of their total budget. This is a strong reflection of the type of committed, dedicated volunteers who give their all to GALF.
In order to keep doing good, GALF needs donations. On May 7, in a not-to-be-missed event, GALF is holding its 2nd Annual Fundraising Gala. This is one of the highlights of the year. We’re particularly honored to have Best Self Atlanta Magazine as our exclusive media sponsor for the event!! It’s an evening of elegance, class, entertainment and… lots of fun! We have a solid assortment of celebrities both hosting and joining the event. A silent auction with amazing items including trips, entertainment, dining and one-of-a-kind experiences are a key of the evening.
Tickets are going fast, but you can still secure yours! Log onto www.givealiftfoundation.org and make sure you’re in the loop. Our website contains a wealth of information – there are pictures from last years event, and information on all of the wonderful programs run by GALF. Hope to see you there! You may want to also have a look at Project Feed Atlanta, a fun hands-on event for the whole family – coming up on Saturday, April 23 at 10:30am.
Let’s start flooding media with all the GOOD that is out there. Go GALF!
