Each month, Best Self Publisher Sherri Adair shares her favorite places, people and events from around Atlanta. Here are her picks for the month of July:

Dora Rae Boutique
This great clothing store is tucked away off of Roswell Road, but it’s worth searching out. With the perfect blend of trendy, unique finds and classic, timeless options, Dora Rae will have you out the door in no time, wearing your new favorite outfit. Great jewelry and accessories too! I love everything in this store.

Fiore Rx
The Fiore RX product line includes an antifungal toenail polish and antifungal fingernail polish for men that combines both beauty and protection against nail fungus. Developed by podiatrists, Fiore RX’s FDA registered formula includes active ingredients like Undecylenic Acid and Propolis. This is a great product! www.fiorerx.com

Ergo One-Touch Salad Spinner

This battery-operated salad spinner only takes one touch to operate, making it easy to throw together a healthy salad. It holds four quarts so there’s no excuse not to eat plenty of greens. This was one of my favorite Mother’s Day gifts. $29.99

If you need a fresh way to enhance your business’s presence at events, Promo-Photo is the way to go. They set up a photo booth at our Over 40 & Fabulous! event and it was a blast! Plus they can customize the photos for your special event.

Buying from these businesses also means you are giving back to the community

BLASTBenefit Classes
While breaking a sweat at BLAST900 Buckhead during the month of June, you’ll also be supporting a non-profit! BLAST900 is partnering with a different charity each month. These classes are $20, with 50% of the proceeds going to further benefit the charity.
www.BLAST900.com – Check back for the next class in July.

For Babies, With Love
Cradle & Thread, an Atlanta-based baby apparel line launched by husband and wife team Jarrett  and Christina Helms,  is making sure that clean, comfy clothing is available to all children in need. Under its Giving Sewn In program, a box of clothes, or a ThreadBox, will be donated to an impoverished mother for every $100 dollars of merchandise sold. Each purchase compounds so every dollar counts and contributes to a ThreadBox.

Cobbie Cares
When Betty Hulse’s husband, Billy was treated and cared for at the Shepherd Center hospital for a spinal cord injury in 2009, Betty decided to show her gratitude in a unique way.  She made and bottled her mother-in-law’s special barbecue sauce, called Cobbie’s Sauce, and gave the bottles to the hospital staff. Today she continues to make the all-natural barbecue sauce using the 60-year-old family recipe and share the proceeds with the Shepherd Center. Cobbie’s Sauce is available at Whole Foods Markets for $8.95.

Rhinoplasty: Q&A with Mike Majmundar, MD

Q. Can I have a celebrity nose?
A: Remember that your nose needs to look good in the context of your face. In order to have a similar outcome as someone else’s nose, the facial features and skin type have to be similar, which isn’t usually the case.

Q: What type of changes can I undergo?
A: It comes down to age, type of nose, skin type, ethnic background, previous history of nasal surgery and medical history. It’s best to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who can give you all of your options.

Q: What is the cost?
A: The cost varies based on the surgeon’s experience, credentials, and the amount of work needed. Don’t bargain shop for this procedure—it costs more to have a revision than it does to have it done right the first time.

Q: How do I find a good surgeon?
A: Make certain that your board-certified facial plastic surgeon specializes in rhinoplasties. Choose a surgeon who is personable, approachable and will listen if you should have concerns later.

Oven-Roasted Pecan Crunch Catfish and Asparagus
Casting a fishing rod into a cool, clear lake is one of the summer’s time-honored traditions, and if you are lucky enough to catch a fish, then try this recipe on your catch. Even if catfish is not one of your favorites, you can use this recipe on any other white, flaky fish like tilapia or trout. The bed of asparagus adds a pop of color and makes a healthy side dish. Use fresh oregano or parsley instead of thyme in the quick breadcrumb topping, if you like.

1 cup whole wheat Panko breadcrumbs
1/4 cup chopped pecans
3 tsps. chopped fresh thyme, divided
1 1/2 tbs. extra virgin olive oil, plus more for the pan
Salt and ground black pepper to taste
1 1/4 pound asparagus, trimmed
1 tablespoon honey
4 (5- to 6-ounce each) catfish fillets

Preheat oven to 425°F. Put breadcrumbs, pecans, 2 teaspoons thyme, 1 tablespoon oil, salt, pepper and 2 tablespoons water in a medium bowl and toss to combine. Set aside. Toss asparagus with remaining 1/2 tablespoon oil, remaining 1 teaspoon thyme, honey, salt and pepper in a large bowl and spread it in a single layer on a large oiled baking sheet. Scatter one-quarter of the breadcrumb mixture over the asparagus and arrange catfish over asparagus. Press remaining breadcrumb mixture on top of catfish fillets. Roast until catfish is cooked through and asparagus is tender, 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to plates and serve.

Whether you’re a runner, a volunteer handing out water, or a cheering spectator, the 2013 AJC Peachtree Road Race always makes July 4th a fun and memorable day in Atlanta! What began with a meager 110 runners all the way back in 1970 has grown over the years to the 60,000 it has today. Such a big race—one of the world’s largest 10k races, in fact—requires extra security, and the city of Atlanta has you covered.

Peachtree Road Race security has been increased by adding 30 new SWAT officers and bringing in bomb-sniffing dogs who will walk the route. With the Peachtree Road Race security increased, you can run the race with some peace of mind.

You can also run the race for a cause this year. The Atlanta Track Club has made a limited number of entries available to benefit some great charity partners, one of which is Kilometer Kids. Kilometer Kids is a fun and supportive running program that works to inspire youth to be healthy and fit. The special entries are $250 each, $215 of which will go directly to the charity of your choice—anything from Kilometer Kids to Ahimsa House to Cystic Fibrosis.

Don’t forget, leading up to the main event is the 2013 Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo which will include informational seminars on running and plenty of activities for the kids in the Family Fun Zone. The expo takes place from July 2-3 at the Georgia Wellness Congress Center.

Sylvia E. Morris, MD, MPH of Emory University School of Medicine, Division of Hospital Medicine answers readers’ questions

What should you do to get the most out of your meeting with the doctor?
In an increasingly complicated medical system, it is a good idea for patients to prepare for their appointments with the doctor. Planning ahead will help you become an informed and empowered patient. A strategy we would recommend to our patients would include writing out any questions the night before the appointment, and if patients are taking numerous medications, it’s useful to put prescription containers in a bag to bring along. This helps patients remember what they are taking, and the details on the containers give the doctor important information. If it is a critical visit, it’s advantageous to take someone along to be a second set of ears. If it is a first visit with a new physician, or if outside tests have been done, patients should be sure the health records arrive a week before the appointment. To avoid stress, patients should try to leave plenty of time to get to the doctor’s office, and a 20-minute buffer to fill out paperwork. Once the physician is in the examination room, it’s time to ask questions and to remember the only dumb question is the unasked question. Before leaving the office, it’s important to understand the treatment plan and how to take the medications, and be aware of any side effects. Finally, don’t forget to make the next appointment!

Summer-Proof Your Hair
Take these steps to protect your locks

  1. Use a shampoo and conditioner that does not contain sodium chloride and is sulfate free – this will help reduce breakage and prevent hair from drying out.
Example: Moroccan Oil Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

  2. Try a leave-in conditioner spray – spray this on once a day to protect hair from UV rays. Example: D’Cinque Leave-in Spray

  3. Renew hair once a month, or as needed, with a deep conditioning treatment to restore hair and remove impurities.
