Thai Papaya Salad

Papaya packs quite a nutritional punch. This tropical fruit is a rich source of antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that can help protect skin against free radical damage. Sporting high levels of vitamin C, vitamin E and beta-carotene, this colorful fruit may help improve your eyesight, digestion and cholesterol levels. Although normally seen in fruit salads, try this fun and different way to incorporate papaya into your diet.

Ingredients & Tools
1 mortar and pestle and one spoon
¼ cup peeled, shredded carrots
¾ cup peeled unripe papaya shreds
¼ fresh lime
1 tbsp. roasted unsalted peanuts
4 cherry tomatoes sliced in half
2 garlic cloves

Dressing: Yields 6 oz

1 tbsp. raw sugar or 2 oz. simple syrup
2 oz. fish sauce
4 oz. fresh lime juice

Method

Wash and peel the carrots and unripe papaya and set aside ready for use. For the dressing, combine all the sugar, fish sauce and lime juice together in a cup or small bowl – you may not need to use all the dressing. Next, place the garlic cloves in the mortar and crush them with the pestle, throw in the lime wedge and continue crushing until the lime looks nicely beat up, then remove the lime wedge. Add the peanuts and lightly crush them, then add the shredded carrots, papaya and tomatoes. Add 1 oz. of the dressing and lightly pound the salad in the mortar using the spoon to help turn the salad as you go. Do this for about 20 to 30 seconds, then plate and enjoy.

International makeup artist Michael Hanz is here to give you his best advice on how to look 10 years younger.

What is a common mistake you see people make that ages them?

First is not taking good care of their skin. Second is wearing too much makeup. The majority of women wear the same makeup they’ve been wearing since their early 20s, and heavy foundation can age you. I’d suggest getting a makeup update every year or so to stay current.

What is a simple way someone can look 10 years younger?

Antioxidant-rich skincare. Also, stay away from hard lines on the face, such as heavy eyeliner, strong blush application, overdrawn lipliners, or the wrong color of concealer. All of theses things will draw attention to fine lines and wrinkles. Muted color and softer application will make the face look smoother.

What is your favorite quote about staying young?

“It takes a lot of money to look this cheap.” -Dolly Parton

What do you think is the secret for looking great at any age?
Age is just a number and your state of mind is key. If you are truly happy with who you are as a person, that youthful spirit will shine through.

What are three activities people can do to stay young?

(1) Live a healthy lifestyle (2)  Do something you love to do (3) Be present in your life, stop stressing and appreciate everything you have.

Whether you’re racing or walking, make sure to stop by the Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo to make sure you are as prepared as possible for the race.

Over the course of July 2nd and 3rd, seminars in the Georgia World Congress Center will answer all your pressing questions about running. Does stretching help prevent injury? What about pre-race nutrition? How do I recover from a race? What is “dead butt syndrome”? Okay, maybe you’ve never wondered about that last one; regardless, you’ll find the answers at this year’s Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo.

You can even learn what to expect from the race from Olympian Jeff Galloway, who has not only won the Peachtree Road Race in the past but has run over 175 marathons in his lifetime. Even if you aren’t running in the race this year, come out to the expo and take advantage of all the free information. It might just be the motivation you need to start training and qualify for the 2014 Peachtree Road Race.

The Peachtree Health and Fitness Expo will take place at the Georgia World Congress Center, Exhibit Hall A2, 285 Andrew Young International Blvd., Atlanta, GA.

Rhinoplasty: Q&A with Mike Majmundar, MD

Q. Can I have a celebrity nose?
A: Remember that your nose needs to look good in the context of your face. In order to have a similar outcome as someone else’s nose, the facial features and skin type have to be similar, which isn’t usually the case.

Q: What type of changes can I undergo?
A: It comes down to age, type of nose, skin type, ethnic background, previous history of nasal surgery and medical history. It’s best to find a board-certified plastic surgeon who can give you all of your options.

Q: What is the cost?
A: The cost varies based on the surgeon’s experience, credentials, and the amount of work needed. Don’t bargain shop for this procedure—it costs more to have a revision than it does to have it done right the first time.

Q: How do I find a good surgeon?
A: Make certain that your board-certified facial plastic surgeon specializes in rhinoplasties. Choose a surgeon who is personable, approachable and will listen if you should have concerns later.
