Atlanta-based Beauty Water™ is a female-owned company determined to offer a better source of hydration. It’s produced with a 10-stage reverse-osmosis process to ensure cleaner, healthier and great-tasting water. “We stand firm behind providing superior water that is free of bacteria, microbes, lead, salt and pesticides,” says Vony-tza Cine, company president. Thousands of Georgians live in a state of food insecurity, lacking enough food resources to provide for the nutritional needs of their household. Low-income families often rely on federal support through the government’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), sometimes referred to as food stamps, in order to buy food. However, purchasing fresh, wholesome, locally grown produce still poses a challenge for them. Fresh produce can not only be higher in price but also more difficult to locate in many areas devoid of quality grocery stores or convenient farmers markets.

Wholesome Wave Georgia (WWG) works to increase access to healthy food, partnering with farmers markets to double the value of SNAP dollars spent there—every $1 of SNAP money can buy $2 worth of food at participating markets. These efforts provide more nutritious produce to SNAP beneficiaries, while also expanding the revenue sources for farmers. Founded in 2009, WWG has steadily increased its reach, putting a total of over $1.5 million back into local food economies by leveraging existing government nutrition programs to create financial incentives for low-income shoppers to frequent local farmers markets.

Rachel Bailey - BSA 0916

As they grow a network of participants and providers, WWG continually identifies new opportunities to further their mission. Some of the program developments in Atlanta include:

SNAP Screening—Partnering with the Department of Family and Children Services to conduct enrollment sessions and facilitate support for more people

EBT Technical Assistance—Setting up wireless technology necessary to facilitate SNAP at farmers markets

Fruit & Vegetable Prescription Program® (FVRx®)—Connecting healthcare providers and farmers’ markets to those with diet-related illnesses

Wholesome Wave Georgia depends on donations and sponsorships to strengthen its resources. The largest annual fundraiser, the Southern Chefs Potluck, brings together premier culinary talent to serve a family-style meal for 250 guests at the Inn at Serenbe. This year’s event will be held on Sunday, September 11, with tickets starting at $150.

Acne, irregular periods and excessive hair growth—these are not only symptoms of puberty, they’re also signs of a problem that affects 10-15% of reproductive age women. Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a metabolic condition that can be a precursor for more serious conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity and cardiovascular disease.

PCOS can be diagnosed by checking for signs of ovary abnormalities such as cysts, irregular menstrual cycles, and elevated male hormones in blood tests. “If you have two of those symptoms you probably have PCOS,” says Mark Perloe, MD, Georgia Reproductive Specialists (GRS) medical director.

Georgia Reproductive Specialists

Treatment options often depend on what goals the patient has in mind. Are they trying to get pregnant and understand the role PCOS can play in infertility? Are they trying to prevent diabetes later in life by managing insulin resistance, which is a major factor in PCOS? Or, do they just want to lose weight to ease symptoms?

GRS helps patients of all ages work closely with a dietician who is well-versed in PCOS, provides assistance with proper supplement and medicine dosage, and explains exercise strategies for PCOS management to help patients get back on track to health and happiness.

To hear Dr. Perloe speak more about PCOS save the date for the PCOS Awareness Symposium September 24 – 25. Hosted by PCOS Challenge, Inc., the symposium is the largest event in the country dedicated to polycystic ovary syndrome and related conditions.  To learn more about the PCOS Awareness weekend, visit pcoschallenge.org/symposium/Atlanta.

Dr. Perloe earned his medical degree from Pennsylvania State University, Hershey Medical Center, and served his residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Wisconsin. Dr. Perloe completed his fellowship in reproductive endocrinology and infertility at the University of Minnesota and is board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology.

As Medical Director of GRS, Dr. Perloe has more than twenty years’ experience in in vitro fertilization, the use of donor eggs, donor sperm, gestational surrogacy, PCOS, fibroids and endometriosis.  As the creator of the PCOS Awareness YouTube Channel, Dr. Perloe is passionate about PCOS awareness, diagnosis and treatment.
