Civillian and Soldier

For some of those serving in the armed forces, returning home from a tour of duty can feel like walking out of one battle and into another. Crippling post-traumatic stress disorder bandaged with substance abuse, lack of transferable skills and a limited support network may contribute to the vulnerability of veterans once they are back on American soil. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that over 40,000 veterans are homeless on any given night. The Veterans Empowerment Organization (VEO) partners with service providers to ease the transition back into civilian life.

At the VEO campus, no veteran—even one with substance abuse issues—is turned away. The program provides shelter, clothing, food and access to critical Veterans Administration medical benefits, as well as transportation to and from doctor’s appointments. Once a veteran has completed the necessary steps to becoming self-sufficient and re-enters the workforce, they are then eligible for the VEO permanent housing program and, ultimately, homeownership.  VEO’s ultimate mission is to end homelessness among veterans in Georgia.

Ready to Help?

Provide “Bootcamp Basics”

Host a drive in your community to help veterans feel more at home at the VEO campus. “Bootcamp basic” supplies that are always needed include bedding, toiletries and clothing. Items like MARTA cards and pre-paid cellphones are also incredibly helpful for veterans as they go back to work.

Lend a Hand

Sometimes it’s the smallest actions of kindness that have the biggest impact. Head to the VEO campus and spend the day shooting hoops, playing chess and bingo or doing other fun activities to brighten the day of veterans going through the program.

Get a Group Together

These vital programs can’t happen without the hard work of volunteers. So grab family, friends and co-workers and spend the day assisting with meal preparation, VEO campus maintenance (painting, landscaping, housing repair) and more.

Gynecomastia - Y Plastic

What is Gynecomastia? Who gets it? At what age should it be treated?
Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by a male developing breast tissue similar to a woman. It can be as small as a disc behind the nipple, or a full-fledged breast. Any man from puberty onward can be susceptible to developing gynecomastia. When/if the breast tissue is detected and is bothersome to the person, it should be discussed with a physician.
What causes it? What effects does it have on self-esteem, etc. of boys/men?
Gynecomastia can occur from a number of things—sometimes it is a normal response to pubertal hormone levels. More commonly it is a consequence of marijuana use, or in association with obesity. A physician will also need to check that it is not from a testicular tumor, or other biochemical abnormalities.

Gynecomastia is tremendously debilitating to self-esteem— especially in younger males. It can be perceived as quite embarrassing for them and may make them less likely to participate in social activities that might reveal that they have abnormal breast tissue. Sports, locker rooms, swimming, etc. (anywhere they would take off their shirts) generally cause extreme embarrassment.

How is it treated? Recovery? Expected outcome?
Once we know the gynecomastia is there, we can determine an appropriate treatment plan. From a minor procedure, coupled with liposuction, to a major procedure involving a “mastectomy for men,” the approach needed will depend on the amount of extra tissue present, and the best way for us to achieve a normal male contoured chest. This can create a minimal down-time recovery, or one that may take several weeks.

What questions should you ask during a consultation? What should you look for in a doctor?
I would recommend choosing a board-certified plastic surgeon who has experience in treating this condition. Ask the doctor to determine the cause of the gynecomastia. Make certain that your surgeon answers your questions and that you feel comfortable with his/her ability to provide the outcome that you desire.

The Fatherless Daught Project Launch - Randolph McDow - BSA 0616

For many, Father’s Day is a way to celebrate the love, support and impact fathers and father figures have on the lives of their children. However, for countless women, it can be a solemn reminder of a “missing piece” — of the scraped knees, heartbreaks, dances and walks down the aisle that were endured without the presence of a dad.

In their book The Fatherless Daughter Project: Understanding Our Losses & Reclaiming Our Lives, Denna D. Babul, RN and Karin Luise, PHD (pictured right) open up about facing that paternal void and how they, and other women, redirected their energy to overcome those many years of pain. The Fatherless Daughter Project seeks to empower a new generation of girls and women by teaching them that the absence of a father figure does not have to define them.

Denna and Karin knew that this father-daughter disconnection was rampant—whether through divorce or death, incarceration, emotional withdrawal, addiction or other reasons. In writing and researching their book, they became inspired to create a tangible way to help women heal from this absence. In September of 2015, they launched The Fatherless Daughter Project (TFDP) nonprofit here in Atlanta. Through mentorship programs, scholarships and support resources TFDP hopes to help women manage the issues surrounding their loss and move forward into a life filled with confidence.
