Jeanne McDanielJeanne McDaniel from The Nutrition Source, LLC shares her best advice for smart snacking.

What is a healthy number of snacks for kids?

A good rule is for a child (and adults) to eat every two to four hours. For most children this will mean two snacks per day.

What are you favorite easy, healthy snacks for kids?

I always recommend that a snack be a healthy carbohydrate with a protein source, and the less processed, the better – no artificial flavorings or colorings. Some examples are carrots or other veggie sticks with hummus, fruits with nuts or seeds, or organic popcorn with a piece of string cheese.

What if kids always seem to want a snack?

If children are asking to eat more often than every two hours, then a parent should try to figure out if the child is just bored or are they truly still hungry. My trick is to offer only a vegetable if they are complaining of hunger but have eaten within the past few hours. If they are truly hungry, then they will take my offer!

Kwavi Agbeyebe, certified weight loss coach , shares the best fitness advice around town.

Kwavi Agbeyegbe, Augst Best FitnessNow that I’m in my 40s, what can I do to get the most from my workouts?

To have a successful workout, you need to have energy. Eating non-fuel food or not eating anything before you exercise will leave you feeling sluggish. You may even experience cramps during your workout.

Eating nutrient-dense foods is a great way to nourish you body and get in optimal shape for a workout. Meals and snacks such as avocado, Greek yogurt, protein smoothies, oatmeal, peanut butter, trail mix, berries, bananas, carrot sticks, grape tomatoes and grapes are excellent foods for fuel.

Marietta Eye ClinicDr. Katerin A. Ortiz from Marietta Eye Clinic answers a reader’s question about vision.

My child is near-sighted. Is there anything I can do to stop his vision from getting worse?

The old tale that children should eat carrots to have good vision is correct. Carrots are high in Vitamin A, which is essential for good vision, as are all green vegetables. Another tale that children should not wear their glasses because their eyes will get weaker is false. Studies have shown that not wearing your glasses increases the prescription faster, so your child should wear his/her glasses as directed.

Dr. David W. JonesDr. David W. Jones from Kaiser Permanente of Georgia shares his best advice  about sleep.

How much sleep do kids really need?

Ensuring that your child has a consistent bedtime routine and gets and adequate amount of sleep is important. Preschoolers should get 11 to 12 hours of sleep, school-age children need at least 10 hours, and teens should aim for nine to 10 hours.

How can parents tell if their child isn’t getting enough sleep?

Mood swings, headaches and drowsiness during the day are common signs of sleep deficiency. Some children may become inattentive, experience feelings of sadness or depression, or earn lower grades in school due to lack of sleep.

Are naps a good idea for kids after school?

Naps are a natural part of sleep for toddlers and preschool-aged children. If an older child needs a nap, it may be an indication that their nighttime sleep is inadequate or interrupted.

Atlanta Magazine Physician Profiles 2011Dr. Mike Majumundar from Northside Plastic Surgery answers a readers question about migraines.

How does Botox help migraines?

Botox is an FDA-approved treatment for migraines. Botox helps all types of headaches, but there are certain criteria to meet before your insurance company will pay for it. You have to have 15 migraines a month that last at least four hours each and must have tried three different classes of migraine medications. Many people don’t meet these criteria, but migraine sufferers can still get Botox treatments to reduce their migraine medication intake, save on prescription costs and live a carefree existence until the Botox wears off.
