GrapefruitFebruary is National Grapefruit Month

Avoid the infamous “grapefruit diet,” but definitely embrace the health and beauty benefits of grapefruit this month. Grapefruit offers antioxidant properties and is also antibacterial. Grapefruit is the friend of an oily complexion; look for face washes or toners with grapefruit ingredients, as they are naturally astringent. You can also use grapefruit juice as a treatment for dry winter scalp: pour a cup of juice over your scalp, massaging it in with your fingers. Use a wide tooth comb to distribute it throughout your locks, and rinse for a natural clean.

Venture shoe pinkWalk this Way

Like many of you, I equate health with natural beauty, and a good walk is a great way to promote both. The Vionic Venture Walking shoe is my new fave when I’m getting my walk on. The Venture’s structure is lightweight and breathable. Vionic added an EVA board in the base of the Venture that is padded and perforated for extra cushioning, as well as arch reinforcement. This EVA absorbs shock, reducing stress on feet, ankles and knees. And hey, let’s not forget that is comes in really fun colors as well.

GlowDryValentinesmakeupValentine’s Makeup Tips

For Valentine’s Day, you want to think fun, flirty and feminine. GlowDry makeup artist Rajaa Hardimon created this glowing makeup look you can recreate for a night out on the town or a romantic evening in.

Skin: Start with a good moisturizer of your choice. For more sheer skin coverage use a CC or BB cream, which are products from a variety of brands that fall between tinted moisturizers and foundations. For a full coverage look, use a liquid foundation. Next, set your foundation with translucent powder.

Eyes: Pinks, creams, plums and browns are great choices for eyes. On bottom waterline, use a nude eyeliner pencil, and then smudge a dark brown eye shadow below the liner to open up eyes and to make them pop. And certainly don’t be afraid to use lashes!

Cheeks: A nice contour with a pink or red blush will do the trick.

Lips: Because of the dramatic eye, Hardimon suggests finishing the lips with a pink or peach nude lip shade.

If you want to leave your Valentine’s look to the professionals, call GlowDry or check out their website for makeup application pricing.

Ditch the movies this month and opt for the magic of live theater, whether it’s a song-filled musical, a dramatic play, a night of improvised scenes or classic stand-up. If you’re already a fan of The Fox Theatre – as you should be, thanks to their regular seasons of national stars and Broadway tours – you’ll be pleased to know that your live theater options don’t stop there. Atlanta’s live theater scene is rich and varied, so this sampling is just the tip of the iceberg. Ticket prices vary by show time and location, but rest assured that you won’t go wrong with shows on any of these local stages.

Act3 Playhouse

This theater is showing the play “The Elephant Man” from January 30 through February 13, which tells the story of Joseph Merrick, a disfigured man living in 19th century London. Alliance Theatre

This company, which has been staging productions since 1968, is showing a musical adaptation of the young adult back “Tuck Everlasting.” Shows run through February 22 at the Woodruff Arts Center. www.alliancetheatre.org   LesMiserablesAurora 298 (1)

The best fitness advice around town

BSA - Kristin Gilbert Feb Best Fitness

Kristin Gilbert, exhale Spa

Q: What are the best classes to build core strength and definition but also get a cardio workout?

A: I would suggest mind and body classes such as barre, Pilates or yoga. These classes help clear the mind, improve overall focus, build core strength, improve cardiovascular endurance and help old injuries. Two to three barre classes per week will help you tone and feel better from the inside out.

Q: What should my heart rate be during a workout?

A: To find your maximum heart rate, subtract your age from 220 beats per minute (bpm). With that formula, a 40-year-old has an estimated heart rate maximum of 180 bpm. To get the most from a shorter interval workout, spend at least one minute at a heart rate of 85 to 90 percent of your max and a recovery minute at about 70 to 80 percent of your max. Repeat these intervals throughout your workout. To encourage fat burn during a longer workout, you can spend more time in the range of 70 to 85 percent of your max.

Q: I’m new to strength training. How can I make sure I’m getting a good workout?

A: Track your workouts by paper, an app, or hire a personal trainer to do this for you. This helps gauge your progress and show strength improvement from workout to workout over weeks or months. Begin with a small amount of weight – you can always do more reps at a slower pace to achieve muscle fatigue. Keep track of your heart rate and listen to your body; push yourself, but don’t overdo it.

Gail Philip

Gail Philip, Curves Roswell

Q: How can I find time to work out when I have so many other things to keep up with?

A: Consider what you can eliminate for exercise time. Think of it this way: if you eliminate watching 30 minutes of TV a few time a week and swap that with a workout, you can easily enjoy the benefits of giving your health a boost. It’s about committing to regular exercise, even just for 30 minutes. And it’s OK if you need a little bit of motivation and coaching to reach your goals – that’s what we’re here for!

Erlese Caruth from A Place For Me Counseling is here to share her best advice on strengthening your relationship with your children.

Caruth, Erlese_cred practice nameWhat is the most common problem your clients have with their children?

Trust. It shows up initially as a communication problem – I hear statements like, “I can’t get my child to communicate with me.”

What is the first step to solving that particular problem?

Ensure that your child has a safe place to be his or her true self and speak without judgment, no matter how difficult the issues are.

Tell us a memorable healing moment you’ve seen in your practice.

I had a 13-year-old girl who would always say, “I just can’t talk to my mom.” We discovered that she overheard her mom talking about not wanting to have children. We created a safe place for them to share honestly and grow.

What have you learned form parenting?

My relationship with my daughters has taught me that, through parenting, we gradually emerge stronger, more confident and able to face challenges that arise.

James, Madison 2_cred Ben Robi PhotographyBalancing work, kids and time for yourself can be hard. Even an active person like myself finds it hard at times to fit a workout into my hectic life. So I have a rule called the “Plus One” rule to tackle this challenge when it occurs. Instead of another item on your to-do list, think of your workout as a party and invite your plus one! I usually start by sending a text out to my friends, inviting them to try something new. This week’s plus one party was a great Power Beats Hot Yoga class at Thunderbolt Power Yoga in Buckhead. We had a blast, and now my friends and I plan to meet for yoga at least twice a week. I highly recommend you give Thunderbolt Power Yoga a try – a drop-in class will run about $18. Don’t forget to invite your plus one!
