Peachtree - Credit Tim EasterdayYour Best Peachtree Road Race Ever!

By Amy Begley, head coach of Atlanta Track Club

July 4 is only a month away, which means the AJC Peachtree Raod Race is just around the corner! Whether you’re training with a group or preparing on your own, hopefully you’ve been following a plan for the past couple of months. Here are some tips to make sure you are ready for race day.

Try Out the Course

Get a feel for the AJC Peachtree Road Race by trying out the course ahead of time. You won’t be alone, the course is always packed with runners and walkers on the weekends leading up to the event. It’s a great way to calm any nerves and see how prepared you are. During the month of June, Atlanta Track Club provides a water stop on Peachtree Road near Peachtree Park Drive each Saturday and Sunday from approximately 7 to 10 a.m. Stop by and be sure to thank our volunteers!

On Race Day

There are a few things you can do to make sure you are relaxed and comfortable when you arrive at the start line.

  • Don’t do anything new – steer clear of foods you don’t usually eat the night before or the morning of the race, and avoid wearing clothing or shoes that you just bought.
  • Arrive early so you aren’t stressed.
  • Drink lots of water before, during and after the race, especially if it’s hot.
  • Keep in mind that you will be running with 59,999 other people. Even with the most careful training, it could be tough to run a personal best.
  • Be sure to take in all of the sights and sounds that make the AJC Peachtree Road Race, the world’s largest 10K, a fun and unique experience.

Good luck, and we’ll see you at the finish line!

BSA - Best Beauty Sun Safety3 Tips for Sun Safety

As much as we think we know about sun protection, it never hurts to brush up on your sun sense. These timely tips from Celeste Hilling, Skin Authority’s CEO, founder and product formulator, will assure you have it made in the shade this summer:

  1. Sunscreens with SPF 15 or greater yield the best results. Scan the active ingredient label to make sure the product contains UVA- blocking elements such as titanium dioxide, zinc oxide or anything in the avobenzone family.
  2. Double up on safety by using a 20 percent concentration of topical vitamin C under your sunscreen daily to boost your skin cells’ immune defense against UV damage and reduce the appearance of brown spots.
  3. Don’t go into the sun for several hours after putting on products that bronze because there are chemicals in them that make your skin more sensitive to sun exposure. Apply these products later in the day and sleep in them.

Madison JamesDo you find yourself struggling to stay on track when you eat out? You are not alone! Even for this lifestyle enthusiast, it can be a very difficult task. That is, until I check out Table & Main in historic Roswell, Table & Main is known for their simple, fresh and seasonal Southern menu, but on Wednesdays, chef Woody Back creates a Paleo-inspired menu. Chef Back saw the need to serve an audience that wanted healthy dishes the gourmet way, so Paleo Wednesdays began. I had the pleasure of enjoying grilled chicken with sweet potato, bacon and apple hash, broccoli, green tomatoes and pecan relish. The meal was amazing – not one bit of food was left on my plate. The menu changes each week, but rest assured, you will enjoy wholesome dishes inspired to feed your body and your soul. Make a reservation so you won’t miss out!

Nancy Longacre

Nancy Longacre

Executive Director of PAWS Atlanta Nancy Longacre is here to share her best advice on dog parks.

Why should dog owners bring their pet to a dog park?

To introduce and socialize their dogs with other dogs. It’s a new environment that gives them lots of fun, interaction and exercise.

Which dogs are best suited for this activity?

Dog parks can be a lot of fun for both humans and their four-legged friends, but you want to make sure it is safe for all concerned. If your dog tends to show aggressive behavior toward other dogs, they may not be suited for dog park visits. Most aggressive behavior can be fixed with professional training. All dogs should be spayed or neutered before visiting a dog park and current on all their vaccines.

What are your favorite parks to bring your own dogs? Why?

My favorite park to bring my own dogs to is Brook Run Dog Park. I really enjoy the abundance of tress and shade, the great walking trails and the more than three acres of land. Also, it is managed by a wonderful group of committed volunteers!

jessica shopsChewable juices are not new to the Atlanta market, but a new local brand caught my eye while I was shopping at While Foods. Harvest Soul Organic Chewable Juices are blended superfood juices with perfectly sized bits of nuts, seeds and berries. The all-organic ingredients include chia, flax, goji berries, spinach, pineapple and more. They are available at Whole Foods for $7.99, but there is a coupon on the Bottle for $1 off. If you buy a full case (six bottles), Whole Foods will ring up the case price, which will save you almost $5. Shake, sip, chew and enjoy!

Arlene Sinanian

Arlene Sinanian

President of Happy Tails Pet Therapy Arlene Sinanian is here to share her best volunteering advice for pet owners.

What kind of volunteering can pet owners do through Happy Tails Pet Therapy?

As a team, a human handler and their pet can visit hospitals, nursing homes and more to share the healing comfort and connection of the human-animal bond.

Please share a memory of a volunteer visit with your own dog.

When leaving a rehab facility, we walked by a young man in a wheelchair wearing a safety helmet. He looked straight at my dog, Aiden, and asked, “Is that a Maltese?” I answered, “Yes, it is! Would you like to see him?” He smiled hugely. His dad took me aside and explained that his son had not spoken at all since his accident three weeks prior. His connection with Aiden seemed to have given him his voice back.

Which animals are best suited for this activity?

The ones with a calm, relaxed demeanor. Will your dog happily and politely greet the stranger? Will your cat or bunny allow themselves to be put into a stranger’s lap? If so, then you might consider pet therapy.

Each month, Best Self publisher Sherri Adair shares her favorite places, people and events from around Atlanta. Here are her picks for the month of June:

DSCN7040Ballroom Dance Clubs of Atlanta – Last month, the Best Self Atlanta and Atlanta Home Improvement teams decided to take a break and have an afternoon centered on fitness, learning and fun at Ballroom Dance Clubs of Atlanta. The instructors Mat, Lauren and Austin cranked up the music and taught us some great moves to Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” and Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.” For two hours we danced, laughed and really did “shake it off.” It was a great way to relieve stress, and the instructors made us feel like stars!

Escape to Blue Ridge Sherri's My Best ListEscape to Blue Ridge - At just a little over an hour from the city and with its natural beauty, Blue Ridge is one of my favorite places. I have enjoyed many “escapes” there over the years, but once I discovered Blue Ridge mountain cabin rentals, I never booked lodging anywhere else. The bed linens, towels, cleanliness and comfort meet standards consistent with high-end resorts, and their cabin home rentals also include stunning views, gourmet kitchens, game rooms, hot tubs and more. You will love it.

IMG_1536Sips n Strokes - The concept is simple: you bring your own beverage and paint, and you leave with your very own work of art! An instructor leads you step-by-step through the painting process – you will be surprised at how good you are. I went recently with my daughter, and we enjoyed 2 1/2 hours of stress free mother/daughter bonding and fun. I will definitely go back.
