Atlanta’s local doctors provide answers to all your medical questions. One Best Self reader asked: Can exercise increase my chances of conceiving?
Dr. Mark Perloe, from Georgia Reproductive Specialists answered: For overweight women with PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome) and irregular menstrual cycles, exercise when combined with diet and medication can result in weight loss and resumption of normal periods and fertility.
However, too much exercise, more than three hours per week of aerobics, has been shown to delay pregnancy. Fifteen to 20 minutes three times per week at 70-80% of maximum heart rate (220 minus your age) along with resistance training (free weights or machines) can help restore fertility.
