I’m not one to watch the popular televised shopping network QVC, however my mother-in-law loves it! While visiting with her this past weekend, we of course tuned in and I was surprised to see that QVC is more than cute ceramic dolls and the latest spring fashions – I discovered In the Kitchen with David, a cooking show that actually has a lot of fun recipes and great advice from host, David Venable.
I loved his insight on one of my favorite sandwiches; a grilled cheese. I really enjoyed his take on how to spice up this tasty sandwich:
Change the Cheese: “Be adventurous, use smoked gouda, cheddar, brie, gruyere, swiss, feta or any cheese that you love.”
Change the Bread: “If you love sourdough, you’ll love it in a grilled cheese sandwich. If you love English muffins, give it a go! The only breads you’ll want to avoid are those with natural baking holes or bagels, because your cheese will be lost in the pan.”
Add Fillings “Dressings and slices of fruit, veggies and meat can really complement your grilled cheese sandwich as long as you pair wisely and avoid overstuffing.”
David’s Apple and Cheddar Grilled Cheese with Turkey Bacon
Ingredients: 2-3 slices of turkey bacon, 2 slices of low-fat cheddar cheese, sliced thin, 3 or 4 Granny Smith apple slices, sliced thin, 1 Tbsp. stone-ground Dijon mustard, 2 slices multigrain bread, Low-fat or fat-free cooking spray
Directions: Cook the bacon in a medium-sized skillet over medium-high heat until crisp. Remove the bacon from the pan and set aside. Spread the mustard on both sides of the bread, add the cheese to each side, then assemble the sandwich with the bacon and apple slices. Prepare the skillet with cooking spray, add the sandwich, cover the skillet (to ensure the low-fat cheese melts evenly), and cook over medium-low heat for 3 minutes, or until golden brown. Spray pan then flip the sandwich and lightly brown the other side. Serve with a side of green and red grapes.
