Dr. Jonathan Lowman from WellStar Medical Group’s Douglasville Medical Center shares his best advice on diabetes.
What medical test should men be sure to get?
A fasting glucose test. This is a simple blood test done when they’ve had nothing to eat and only water after midnight.
How often should they get this test?
Yearly, when they are over the age of 40.
What results can they expect to receive?
Normal is less than 100. If the glucose is higher than 100, we will do more lab tests, like an A1C test, to check for diabetes.
Is this test typically covered by insurance?
When do men know they need to get this test?
Symptoms of diabetes mellitus include frequent urination, increased thirst, unexplained weight loss and blurry vision.
What preventive care can someone do to avoid developing diabetes?
Just watching your diet and exercise are good first steps.
