What is autologous fat transfer?
Autologous fat transfer involves transplanting samples of fatty tissue from one area on your body to another. “Autologous” simply means the grafts are taken from your body such as the abdomen, love handles, hips, or thighs.
What are the advantages of autologous fat transfer versus other techniques like facial fillers?
Synthetic fillers are gradually broken down by the body, but fat transfer makes use of your own tissues, which eliminates any potential complication associated with foreign materials. Facial fat transfer provides many of the benefits of a face-lift, but with no scarring and less recovery time. It also provides a natural quality to the results.
Who is a good candidate for autologous fat transfer?
People desiring a more youthful buttock, calf, and face are typical candidates. This option is especially attractive for patients with early signs of facial aging who want to explore options other than a face-lift.
What areas can be treated with fat injections?
On the face, we can treat the lips, temples, under eye area, cheek bones, jaw line, lines around the mouth, smile parentheses, and scarring from acne or surgery. Body wise, buttock, calf, breast, hips, and hands are popular areas.
How is the procedure done?
We harvest fat cells from an area that offers “spare” volume, which is usually the abdomen or thighs in most patients. The harvested cells are processed for several minutes (in order to yield a high concentration of stem cells) and are injected into the area to be augmented.
Will the autologous fat transfer procedure leave any scars?
No. We use very small “ports” to access the deeper tissues when laying down the fat cells. They are usually hidden in naturally occurring facial lines and fade away with time.
Will some of the fat disappear with time?
Yes. Because a small percentage of the fat graft will not retain its volume, a slight excess of cells are usually transferred.
