Hot Summer Highlights

Why are highlights most popular in the spring and summer months?
People tend to want to go lighter when the sun comes out and desire a more natural, sun-kissed glow look for the warmer weather.

What are the biggest highlighting trends we'll see this season?
Most people are going for a more subtle look with their highlights and using a triangular technique with an icy shade.

What types of base colors look best with highlights?
Typically any base tone color will work with highlights if done correctly. The key is to put in highlights that complement the eyes and skin tone so that they light up the face.

What are the most flattering options for blondes who want to add highlights?
Everyone has their own preferences on highlights, so it depends on the client's goals. If the client wants something more natural, I would focus on framing the face with the highlights and the areas that would be affected naturally by sunlight. If the client wants something more dramatic and chunky, we would look at other technique like ombre or Balyage.

What are the best highlighting options for brunettes?
Brunettes do best in the long run and between visits if they go with highlights that are two to three shades lighter for the highlights.

Can redheads pull of highlights?
Absolutely. Redheads actually have a lot of flexibility. They can go with a brighter red and even use lowlights to add some additional contrast. They can also go lighter and give a more strawberry-blond color with highlights.

What are the best highlights for someone who wants to freshen up their look without making a dramatic change?
Going with a more natural approach (applying highlights in the same way the sun would naturally highlight the hair) is always a nice way to offer a subtle change that still lights up the face.

What are the best ways to maintain highlights in the spring and summer months?
Take care of them by using good products that are recommended by your stylist. It is important to use products that will not strip the color/highlights and will offer UV protection from the sun.

Are there any highlighting trends for men?
Yes!  There is a very popular and attractive trend in men who are starting to go grey. They are going with highlights and lowlights that will give a salt and pepper look to the hair (think George Clooney). Very hot!
