Pilates: An Essential Part of Physical Therapy Treatment

As a physical therapist, I have found a treatment modality that can be used in all levels of the rehabilitation and fitness spectrum.  Pilates allows me to do just that.  Pilates is for acute patients just out of a surgical procedure, for older adults who want to begin a fitness program, for patients who have completed a rehab program and want to return to exercise or sport, and even for sport specific training for a high- level athlete.

Pilates strengthens a person’s core – the muscles of the abdomen, pelvis, and lower back.  We use it in everything we do.  It’s the dynamic link between the upper and lower body, and a strong core alleviates excess stress on the peripheral joints and prevents injury.  Pilates addresses motor control, endurance, balance, and flexibility; it also increases energy and movement efficiency, decreases neck and pack pain, and gets athletes back in the game faster.  Core strengthening through Pilates is an integral component of injury prevention, rehabilitation, or sports performance program.  Workouts, on both mats and equipment, are both safe and challenging for everyone, at any level.

Pilates is definitely not just for women. Men, women, and children can all use Pilates to improve posture, flexibility, strength and agility. Basic principles including breathing, pelvic and rib cage placement, scapular stabilization, and head position are embodied in each exercise.  It is important to remember, however, that a qualified Pilates instructor is essential for correct technique and injury prevention.  Pilates enhances physical therapy and your health – try it.
