5 Nail Salon Safety Tips

Written by

1Take an Observation of the Salon. The surrounding areas (shelves, tables, equipment, and floors) should be clear from dust and debris. The pedicure chairs should be sanitize and pedicure bowls should be disinfected with Barbicide after each client. A business license should be visible for customers. Each nail technician should have their license posted at their station.

2Understand How They Disinfect Their Tools. Tools are disinfected through a 15 minutes soaking disinfection or using an autoclave sterilization. Barbicide or MarV-Cide disinfection are used for tools to soak 15 minutes in disinfection. Buffers and files should be single-use only and disposed after each client.

3Take Observation of Nail Technician. A nail technician should wash their hands before every service. They should wear gloves to prevent the spread of bacteria to the client. Nail technicians should wear a mask during pedicures to prevent contact with debris. Make sure the nail technician is not reusing dirty tools on you.

4Chemical Usage. From beginning to the end of service, you should always know what chemical is being used on you. The label should be simple for you to identify (for example, acetone, alcohol, callus reducer).

5Say "NO" to Pain. There should be no sign of redness or pain felt through any service. The sign of RED means STOP!

P-1It's important to understand that safety is vital in the nail salon. Take safety matters into your own hands the next time you visit your nail salon. Communication is key. Always ask questions on matters you don't know. You can have confidence with safety at Waterless MediPedi & Nail Spa, a Certified Safe Salon. Safe Salons use autoclave sterilization and uphold the highest standards of aseptic techniques in their establishments.

Letisha Royster, LNT, ANT-C
Owner of Waterless Medi-Pedi & Nail Spa

It was a desire to create a nail salon that could cater to the needs of chronic disease sufferers, as well as the everyday woman or man, that lead Advanced Nail Technician Letisha Royster to open Waterless Medi-Pedi & Nail Spa.

By forgoing soaking hands and feet during manicures and pedicures, 12 to 15 gallons of water are saved and the danger of spreading waterborne pathogens is practically eliminated. Waterless Med-Pedi & Nail Spa enhances its efforts to reduce infection risks by using an autoclave sterilization (medical grade sanitation) for all instruments, disposing nail buffers, and files after each client.

Every guest that visits the establishment doesn't simply leave with a fresh coat of polish, but also receives a consultation regarding their health, an evaluation of their hands and feet, and recommendations of services and products to maintain the vitality of their skin and beauty of their nails over time.

All About Injectables

Written by

What do you recommend for someone wanting fuller lips?

A fuller lip has always been desirable, but is particularly popular right now. Lips can be contoured, given more volume and perioral lines softened with injectable fillers. A natural look can be maintained with conservative injection, preserving the natural contours of the lip. The most commonly used fillers in the lip are composed of synthetic hyaluronic acid (such as Restylane® and Juvederm®), a naturally occurring substance in the skin. Volbella® is a new hyaluronic acid product designed specifically for a soft, natural feel in the lips (with less swelling after treatment) and that lasts 12 months. It costs approximately $400 per tube. It is my new favorite product for the lips!

How do you best address facial lines and folds?

If lines are produced by muscle action, so-called dynamic lines (such as frown lines or crow's feet), they are best addressed with neurotoxin injections like Botox® or Dysport®. Deeper folds, such as nasolabial folds or marionette lines, can be softened with filler injections like Restylane®, Juvederm® or Radiesse®. My current favorite approach is a combination of an injectable in the cheek, such as Voluma®, to restore volume, followed by Juvederm® to soften the nasolabial folds or marionette lines. More than in any other area of the face, in my opinion, there is a definite art to cheek injections. I constantly hear patients express fear of big cheeks that look unnatural with smiling. However, when they see a natural look that is more lifted and sculpted, they are thrilled to have their cheekbones back!

shutterstock 158948495Are injectables just for the face?

An area often overlooked is the hands, which also reflect our aging. Skin becomes thinner and we lose volume in the hands as well as the face. Injectables such as Radiesse® (which is FDA approved for use in the hands), are a great way to replace that volume and soften the look of aging hands. This combines beautifully with laser treatments to reduce pigment and spots on the back of the hands—improving the appearance of the skin.

So, with the holidays around the corner, is there enough recovery time with injectables?

Absolutely. There is no significant downtime with any injectables. That being said, there can be occasional swelling and bruising, depending on the area being injected, so don't wait until the last minute before your events!

Men’s Skincare in 3 Simple Steps

Written by

Men's skin is resilient and tough, but it still requires a regimen to ensure it's ready for life's everyday events and ages gracefully. Three main products every man should have are cleanser, sunscreen, and a night treatment.

Cleansers: Gentle cleansers allow removal of dirt without the removal of all the natural oils, leaving skin hydrated yet cleaned. When suffering from acne prone or oily skin, there are different types of cleansers that may contain ingredients to combat those concerns.

Sunscreens: Sunscreens are the answer for slowing the formation of aging lines and allowing dark spots to fade. Sun is everywhere--even on overcast, cloudy, rainy, and snowy days. Wearing an SPF30+ daily can be the difference between "looking your age" and "looking beyond your years."

Night Treatment: Any cream that targets a concern, whether it's acne, dark spots, skin texture, ingrown beard hairs/bumps, or anti-aging should be applied to the skin at night--when hands are away from the face, sweating is diminished, and sun isn't around. This allows the topical treatment the most uninterrupted contact time with the skin.

Creating a personal men's skin care regimen can be an overwhelming task. Dr. Nikki Hill at the SOCAH Center can assist with creating simple yet effective regimens that are specific to skin type and skin goals. This month we are celebrating men's skin care with a free chemical peel (can be gifted to a friend or loved one) after a skin assessment! Call our office today to schedule a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Hill and learn how to maintain healthy skin everyday.

Botox and Filler: Putting It All Together

Written by

Growing older is a gift. Looking older is a choice.

Have you ever asked yourself what's changing as you age? Why is it that we don't confuse a beautiful mother in her early 40s with her beautiful teenage daughter? The answer is revealed in their facial shape.

About every 20 years, the facial skeleton completely turns over and each time the facial bones lose volume. Also, as we age, facial fat redistributes and in some areas gets less robust. The most common early changes are noticed at the eyelid-cheek junction, or "the tear trough", where loss of fat creates hollowness under the eye, and a visual lengthening of the lower lid. The soft, round, full cheek of youth also deflates as the cheek descends, the highlight flattens and smile lines deepen. As aging continues, these changes magnify; the cheek area becomes a series of undulating peaks and valleys and the lower face and neck become heavy. A double chin can make some look older and heavier, even if still young!

Fortunately, today we can address these issues with a number of techniques, many of which are minimally invasive. Facial injectable fillers such as Restylane®, Juvederm® and Voluma® replenish lost volume. Lasers smooth and tighten the skin; skin sagging can be diminished without incisions using ThermiRF (minimally-invasive radiofrequency) or, when necessary, surgical procedures such as minilift or facelift. For an unwanted double chin, new treatments can permanently eliminate fat, including Kybella®, an injectable medication, or CoolSculpting®, a cold therapy that sculpts the neck non-invasively.

To learn about the treatments that are best for you, visit a facial plastic surgeon for a consultation. Remember — consistently excellent, natural-looking results require a surgeon with an artist's eye for detail, meticulous surgical skill and the impeccable judgment that only comes with experience.

Dr. Yellin’s patient on whom he performed complete facial rejuvenation: injectable facial volume, upper eyelid blepharoplasty, lower eyelid tightening, a lower face and neck lift and CO2 laser skin resurfacing.

Growing older is a gift. Looking older…well, not so much. Here’s the good news: 2015 is an exciting time for facial plastic surgeons and the patients we serve. We have never had such a wide variety of tools and techniques available to help you look your best:

  • Scientifically formulated skin care products
  • Lasers to treat redness, brown spots, unwanted hair and wrinkles
  • Non-surgical tightening techniques
  • Long-lasting fillers to replenish facial volume and return your face to a more youthful shape
  • Minimally invasive surgical procedures that can be done in the office under local anesthesia
  • When necessary, complete surgical facial rejuvenation

shutterstock 124995839These can all take years off your appearance and allow you to look just as good as you feel. But with so many new treatments, patients are often confused. Whom should I see? What should I do? What can I afford? These are all real issues that must be considered.

First, find a surgeon who not only has lots of experience but a genuine interest in your concerns, whose aesthetic you share and judgment you trust. Second, remember to stay within your budget. Be careful when choosing a doctor solely based upon price, as there is truth to the statement, “You get what you pay for.” Aesthetic procedures should make you look naturally more beautiful after treatment. Otherwise, the procedure has not served you well. Understand that it is absolutely necessary for your treating physician to be knowledgeable and skilled, but just as important, they must also have an artist’s eye for detail, proportion and symmetry. Your face is your public persona, so remember, excellent facial aesthetic care goes unnoticed. Be sure to seek out expert care because your face is worth it.

A Progressive Approach to an Expert Facelift

Written by

Facial rejuvenation procedures to reduce the signs of aging have increased in popularity as surgical techniques have progressed. One result of these advances has been confusion over what the different terms for facelift mean. As a patient, how do you know whether you need a mini lift, S-lift, deep plane lift or any other particular variety?

The real key to a great facelift result is consulting with an experienced facelift surgeon who can help you understand the best procedure for you based on your needs, goals and time frame. Dr. Beaty takes this concept a step further at his Atlanta practice and offers all of his patients a completely individualized, progressive approach to both consultation and surgery. This method ensures that you will have the facial rejuvenation procedure that maximizes your results while minimizing incisions and downtime.

Dr. Beaty has spent years in training and practice mastering all of the major facelift techniques and developing and publishing this unique progressive approach to ensure your results are the best they can be. Beginning with your consultation, Dr. Beaty performs a comprehensive assessment of your facial skin, supportive tissue and volume needs. The result of following this type of approach is a perfect matching of surgical technique to the needs of each patient, delivering a rejuvenated new you every time!

Freeze Your Fat Away in 2015

Written by

The New Year traditionally rings in with personal resolutions to improve some aspect of our lives. This often results in promises to improve healthful living habits including exercise and nutritious diet. These healthful daily routines contribute greatly to wellness, personal success and appearance. Despite our best efforts, many times we confront stubborn areas of fat or uneven contours, which detract from the aesthetic effect we have worked so hard to achieve.

CoolSculpting is an FDA-approved method of non-surgical fat reduction and tissue contouring. It effectively eliminates rolls and bulges with no incisions, no anesthesia and no downtime. Fat cells are frozen and destroyed by apoptosis, a natural process for elimination of dead cells without any trauma to the surrounding tissues. Patients can comfortably complete this office treatment in a few hours and return to their regular activities the following day, expecting to enjoy their fat reduction results in just a few weeks.

CoolSculpting results are best when performed at a center where the physician and staff are fully trained in assessment and treatment techniques, preferably at Zeltiq's CoolSculpt University program. Adding a nutrition program and fitness counseling, along with body composition monitoring, can further enhance results and optimize appearance, health and success.

Mark M. Beaty, MD, Double Board Certified Facial
Plastic Surgeon, Beaty Facial Plastic Surgery

Dr. Beaty is an expert in personalized facial aesthetic enhancement, employing both surgical and non-surgical techniques. CoolSculpting is the only triple FDA-approved, non-surgical fat reduction treatment that uses controlled cooling to eliminate stubborn fat.

Trust Your Face to an Expert

Written by

Aging of the face is inevitable. Over the years, we are subjected to sun, environmental pollutants and natural loss of elasticity. While less firm skin is also less able to renew itself, fortunately there are safe and innovative ways to help reverse signs of aging.

Atlanta’s Dr. Sinha offers different types of facelift procedures to suit each patient’s needs. A customized facelift grants the most dramatic and long-lasting improvement for most people, and other options, such as mini-facelifts, can improve specific areas. For example, the “s-lift” targets the mid-face with less expense and less invasion, and a “j-lift” addresses the lower face and neck.

During the facelift, Dr. Sinha removes excess skin and sculpts the jaw and neckline, restoring a more youthful position to the skin and underlying tissue. Facelift incisions are hidden in the fold in front of and behind the ear into the hairline. The skin and the deep tissue layer are repositioned to eliminate wrinkles and provide a long-lasting lifted look.

Q & A with Dr. Sinha

BnAWhat’s the recovery process like?

Patients typically stay overnight and are discharged the next morning. The patient will apply a dressing to the face for a few days, and stitches are typically removed after two weeks.

What types of reactions should I look out for?

You might experience mild bruising or discoloration for the first week or two after surgery. An esthetician from the Atlanta Institute for Facial Aesthetic Surgery can help you apply makeup to cover up any bruising or discoloration. Swelling is also common and should go down on its own within the first few weeks.

What factors do you consider before going ahead with the procedure?

A patient’s skin type, ethnicity, individual healing, bone structure and desired outcome are all taken into account in order to plan the ideal facelift.

Dr. Sinha is a Double Board Certified Facial Plastic Surgeon specializing in cosmetic and functional surgery of the head and neck. He has successfully treated thousands of patients and is highly regarded and well respected by his peers in the medical community.
