Best Rx: MedZed

Dr. Timothy Horton from MedZed answers a reader’s questions about influenza.

Horton, MD, Tim_cred MedZed

Q: Can I get influenza from the flu shot?

A: The injection version of the flu shot is not a live viral vaccine, so patients cannot get the flu from this method. Common side effects include local reactions at the site of injection, mild fever and minor achiness. What is most confusing for my patients is that the flu shot does not protect from everything they consider the flu – it will not prevent patients from getting other common winter colds.
