Best Rx: The Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery

Dr. Brian Maloney from The Maloney Center for Facial Plastic Surgery answers a reader’s question about fat-transfer procedures.

Dr. Brian Maloney from The Maloney Center for Facial Plastic SurgeryQ: I’ve heard mixed reviews on using your own fat (instead of a filler) to replace volume in conjunction with cosmetic procedures like facelifts. What is the current status of the fat transfer procedure?

A: Twenty years ago, fat transfer was very unpredictable. Many times, the fat would reabsorb and the effects were lost. Over the past 10 to 15 years, medical research has identified the challenges while refining the process and the tools that we use. The result is that fat transfer today is much more predictable and long-lasting for most patients. The additional plus side to fat transfer continues to be the fact that the procedure utilizes your own tissue which is not “foreign” to your body.
