Better After 40

Photography by Sarah Diller’s PhotographsAs a millennial myself, I must say my generation gets more than its fair share of notoriety. While, I’m still deciding whether this buzz is good or bad, I am proud that publications such as Best Self Atlanta are shining a light on those whose 20s and 30s are behind them. Sometimes what lies ahead can be just as, if not more, exciting than what is left behind. When our 2017 Over 40 & Fabulous! contest winner, Lisa M. Washington, was in her 20s, she would tell her friends that she couldn’t wait to be in her 40s: “When I was younger, I looked at the women in my life in their 40s and I saw this great freedom of expression and confidence.” As I’m sure many of you can attest, life after 40 is as dynamic as you make it. Our contest finalists are proof—from Tran Bui Smith’s journey to self acceptance to Kim Steen Langan experiencing the joy of becoming a new mother right before her 41st birthday, these 16 standouts are simply amazing!

In celebration of one generation to the next, our article, In My Father’s Footsteps, takes a look at another group that some might say doesn’t always receive the recognition they deserve—dads. From running the AJC Peachtree Road Race together for decades to simply catching up over milkshakes every Friday, five groups of Atlanta fathers and sons share the traditions that bond them. On Father’s Day and beyond, it’s always important to take the time to thank and acknowledge the role models that helped shape and inspire who we are today.

And don’t forget to find ways to give back to your community like puppeteer Jeff Domke does every summer when he brings his talents to kids at Camp Kudzu.

Happy reading,
