Busy Mom Skincare

Happy mom and daughter washing faces

By Corrie Alford, MD

Being a mom can be all-consuming, and often times facials, massages, and coffee dates with friends become pushed to the end of the to-do list. However, no matter how busy life gets and how much mom-ing takes over, one thing you shouldn’t compromise is skincare!

Being committed to your skin is important as it will be with you long after the kids are gone. Preventive skincare is key to control acne, pigmentation problems and
later actinic (sun) damage. Below are our routine recommendations and a few tips to keep you on track.

Skincare Regimen

  • Cleanse your face at least once daily with a gentle cleanser. Avoid harsh chemical exfoliants, masks and brushes initially as they can be more irritating as we age.
  • Apply antioxidant product to clean, dry skin to help correct damage occurring from sun exposure, visible light exposure and pollutants. These products generally contain Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Resveratrol or other antioxidants.
  • Moisturize in the morning with non-comedogenic product that contains sunscreen SPF 30 or greater. A tinted moisturizer or a makeup that contains a similar level of sunscreen can eliminate a step from your morning routine.
  • Use a retinol or retinoid product (adapalene, tretinoin, tazaroten or triferotene) at night. These products help to treat acne, reverse sun damage and build collagen to prevent fine lines and wrinkles.
  • If you struggle with dark spots or patches, fading agents can help. Over the counter options include low strength hydroquinone, alpha and beta hydroxy acids and azaleic acid products. Pigmentation problems can be particularly difficult, so evaluation by a board-certified dermatologist may be necessary to properly address this issue.
