If you have a coated tongue—a buildup of bacteria and debris—you will benefit from a tongue scraper. A coated tongue can be caused by cigarettes, dry mouth, or as a side effect of medication.

Even though scraping the tongue can reduce bad breath, other techniques include:

• Brushing your teeth at least twice a day

• Using mouthwash

• Preventing dry mouth by staying hydrated

• Seeing your dentist at least twice a year

• Using dental floss at least once per day
