Not all water activities have to be strenuous. Take a relaxing one-and-a-half mile float down the Chattahoochee River on a raft or tube. Grab friends and family, pack a cooler and let Shoot the Hooch take care of the rest. A shuttle will take you to and from launch spots. Didn’t pack a bite to eat? Don’t worry. Hot dogs, ice cream, and drinks are on hand for purchase at a stand near the launch spot.

Photography by Sarah Diller’s PhotographsAs a millennial myself, I must say my generation gets more than its fair share of notoriety. While, I’m still deciding whether this buzz is good or bad, I am proud that publications such as Best Self Atlanta are shining a light on those whose 20s and 30s are behind them. Sometimes what lies ahead can be just as, if not more, exciting than what is left behind. When our 2017 Over 40 & Fabulous! contest winner, Lisa M. Washington, was in her 20s, she would tell her friends that she couldn’t wait to be in her 40s: “When I was younger, I looked at the women in my life in their 40s and I saw this great freedom of expression and confidence.” As I’m sure many of you can attest, life after 40 is as dynamic as you make it. Our contest finalists are proof—from Tran Bui Smith’s journey to self acceptance to Kim Steen Langan experiencing the joy of becoming a new mother right before her 41st birthday, these 16 standouts are simply amazing!

In celebration of one generation to the next, our article, In My Father’s Footsteps, takes a look at another group that some might say doesn’t always receive the recognition they deserve—dads. From running the AJC Peachtree Road Race together for decades to simply catching up over milkshakes every Friday, five groups of Atlanta fathers and sons share the traditions that bond them. On Father’s Day and beyond, it’s always important to take the time to thank and acknowledge the role models that helped shape and inspire who we are today.

And don’t forget to find ways to give back to your community like puppeteer Jeff Domke does every summer when he brings his talents to kids at Camp Kudzu.

Happy reading,

Photography by Sawyer Photography; Artemus Jenkins.Change is good. And in the past year, we’ve undergone several. In an effort to take our organization to a new level, I had to make some important decisions. One was to redesign and rebrand our sister flagship publication, Atlanta Home Improvement. With a modified name, refreshed look and new editorial purpose, we now produce
bi-monthly issues with monthly distribution.

The other was to welcome Laura J. Downey who serves as our company’s managing editor. She brings with her more than 15 years of editorial experience (including PEOPLE magazine and Forbes Travel Guide) to Best Self Atlanta, My Home Improvement (formerly Atlanta Home Improvement), and our six hyperlocal magazines—My Alpharetta, My Buckhead,
My East Cobb, My Intown, My Sandy Springs, and My Vinings/Smyrna

We’re excited about these hyperlocal magazines because each one is 100 percent dedicated to neighborhood-specific content to help its residents live their best lives. As we celebrate the one-year anniversary of these quarterly magazines, toast with us as we commemorate the one-year anniversary of Atlanta Best Media. As the company continues to grow, we are optimistic about its future.

We just wrapped a successful 30 Days of Healthy, Beautiful Skin Blog and Facebook Live Series for Best Self, which engaged more than 14,000 unique views and countless shares and likes. And we now invite you to join us in June as we embark on another Facebook Live and Blog Series but this time, it’s 30 Days of Home Remodeling.

One decision can impact your entire life. Each decision I’ve made for the company is a testament to embracing change and growth. The road hasn’t always been smooth but it’s been worth it. If you’re contemplating making a change, be brave! Don’t let the fear of change alone stop you. Get after it. Life is too short not to.

Sadly, our 30 days has come to an end. We are happy to finish out the month of May with a Vivace™ Micro-Needling RF treatment from Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging. The Vivace system is unique in that it uses 36 gold microneedles to penetrate the skin to a specific depth that the esthetician chooses. Once the selected depth is reached, high levels of radiofrequency energy are delivered into the deep tissue.

Vivace allows you to adjust the depth of penetration from 0.5mm to 3.5mm. The range of depths are used to target different issues. If the desired result is diminished wrinkles, the esthetician would not go as deep as they would if they were targeting scars for example.

This is a great supplement for a laser treatment or chemical peel, especially in the summer months. Clients receive all the benefits of skin tightening, plus improvement in the production of collagen.

During the first 20 minutes of my treatment Heather Dobson, L.M.E. spread numbing cream all over my face to assure minimal discomfort. After the numbing agent was removed, they applied what’s called a Silk Peel. This allowed the Vivace machine to run smoothly over my face without irritation.

Vivace is the only Micro-Needling RF system that offers the following features:

  • True motorized delivery of the needles into the tissue.  This provides consistent depth of penetration and enables you to deliver energy to the precise level of the skin.

  • Safe for all skin types (even tanned skin)

  • Easy, repeatable results for every patient

  • Designed to work with various topicals and growth factors

  • 31 adjustable depth settings

  • Intuitive touch screen with skin depth graphics for each setting to help the provider determine the specific depth of the needles

Overall, I was very surprised by how painless the treatment was. Immediately after the treatment, I had some redness, mostly on my forehead, but after about two hours my skin looked perfectly normal and was glowing.

Heather advised me not to use any makeup and to avoid the sun for the next 12 hours. She also sent me home with a little care package that included soothing moisturizers.

Depending on the problem being addressed with the skin, Aesthetic Body Sculpture Clinic & Center for Anti-Aging recommends having three to eight treatments done in a series, each a month apart.

As we draw near to the end of Melanoma/Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month, we want to share information about the different types of skin cancer as each one shows different types of symptoms.

Basal cell carcinoma occurs on areas of the skin that experience a lot of sun exposure. Signs of this type of cancer can include a slightly shiny or white-colored bump on the skin. It can also appear as a scar-like wound.

Squamous cell carcinoma most often appears on the face, ears, and hands. Individuals with darker skin, however, are more prone to this type of skin cancer in places that do not get lots of sun exposure. Symptoms include a hard, red-raised area or a flat area that appears dry and cracked.

Melanoma is the most dangerous form of skin cancer because it can develop on any area of the body. Melanoma most often appears as a normal mole that then becomes cancerous. This type of cancer can affect people of all skin types and tones. Symptoms include brown-colored spots with darker flakes inside, a mole that has changed color or size, or a small wound that is irregular in shape. Individuals with darker skin tend to experience these symptoms in places that do not get a lot of sun exposure, such as under the nails.

Other, less common types of skin cancer include:

Kaposi sarcoma: This type of skin cancer is rare, affecting less than 20,000 people in the United States a year. It can occur more often in individuals with an autoimmune condition. Signs include purple, red, or brown spots on the surface of the skin.

Merkel cell carcinoma: This type of skin cancer is also rare but occurs mostly in older individuals. Merkel cell carcinoma causes firm, shiny lumps that raise on or just under the skin and in hair follicles. It is most often found on the head and neck.

Sebaceous gland carcinoma: This uncommon and aggressive cancer originates in the skin’s oil glands. Sebaceous gland carcinomas, which usually appear as hard, painless nodules, can develop anywhere, but most often occur on the eyelid.

Whether symptoms have been noticed or not, it is recommended that everyone receive a skin cancer screening once a month. The sooner these symptoms are recognized, the better chance there is to help prevent or treat cancer.
