Spending More Time at Home? Upgrade Your Windows For Better Comfort and Energy-Saving Benefits

It’s no surprise that windows and doors can have a noticeable effect on your energy bills. New windows can be up to 45 percent more energy efficient. And because windows account for 10-25 percent of your home’s total energy consumption, upgrading to more energy-efficient windows can start saving you money from the moment they are installed.

For best in class energy savings look for ENERGY STAR® approved windows. ENERGY STAR® is a federal program that determines whether or not a variety of products, including windows and doors, meet certain energy-efficiency standards. AVI Windows & Doors offers a wide selection of ENERGY STAR® products, including Marvin Windows and Doors. Marvin offers thousands of windows and doors with two or three panes of glass that are energy-efficient, versatile, and beautiful. Plus, special gases between the panes slow the transfer of heat to further enhance insulating power.

Curious about upgrading your windows? AVI Windows and Doors showrooms are available on a strict by-appointment-only basis. The AVI installation experts utilize technology to provide window estimates and have introduced a Remote Quote Checklist to initiate window replacement projects. If virtual consultations are not feasible, outdoor on-site meetings may be conducted. Learn more at aviwindowsanddoors.com or call 678.297.1111.

4 Unique Ways to Spice It Up with Sod

Think sod is just for creating a nice lawn?  Think again and change up your landscape design with these four creative ways to use sod from the lawn masters at NG Turf:

1. Create a luscious green border

Use strips of sod around planting beds or hardscape features to create verdant lines that flow through your landscape. You’ll get a sleeker, more modern look than using traditional ornamental grasses or border plantings. A quick weekly once-over with a Weedwacker and an edger will keep your sod border neat and trim.

2. Build pathways to protect your tootsies

Few things hurt more than burning your feet on hot pool decks or pavers when walking around outside in the summer. A simple fix is to use sod to create cool walkways between your patio door, the pool area, and any other entertainment zones. Mowing these walkways is a breeze, especially if the surrounding hardscapes are set just a bit lower than the grass.

3. Soften and beautify stone paths

Instead of using gravel or sand between your large walkway pavers, set the stones a little further apart and install strips of sod. The contrast of the stone against the lively green sod can be particularly breathtaking when you create artistic patterns or set your stones on a diagonal. For easy mowing, be sure the stones are set at least half-an-inch lower than the sod.

4. Define your outdoor rooms with a sod carpet

It’s a common interior design practice to define a space with an area rug. Why should your outdoor living spaces be any different? To limit irrigation and mowing needs, install sod “carpets” between larger areas of hardscapes to define your outdoor dining and entertainment areas.

No matter what clever ways you dream up to incorporate splashes of beautiful green sod into your landscape, be sure you choose only the freshest, certified turfgrass. Farm-fresh sod from NG Turf is cut to order and available in quantities large and small.

Find Your Zen by Starting a Garden with These Calming Herbs

Gardening is a great way to pass the time and keep up social distancing. You can even plant herbs that have a calming effect in teas and when used for aromatherapy.

Jamie Rosenthal of Roots Down, an urban agriculture initiative in Atlanta, recommends planting these herbs in the garden for their calming effects:

  1. Lavender is a really calming herb that blooms multiple times a year.  The Ruffles Blueberry variety has an amazingly attractive bloom and great foliage.
  2. Tulsi (Holy Basil) has a wonderful sweet smell and is great mixed into your Sun Tea recipes. It is also used for calming nerves and shows up in a lot of medicinal recipes.

  3. Lemon Verbena is a tender perennial herb whose fragrant leaves smell like lemon candy.

  4. Sage comes in many amazing varieties. Pineapple sage is a big favorite.  The beautiful red blooms attract hummingbirds and the wonderful pineapple scent is reminiscent of tropical beach vacations.

Order these wonderful plant varieties for delivery or pick-up from home and garden stores such as Ace Hardware and Pike Nurseries, or order local from independent nurseries such as Neighborhood Seed and Feed in Smyrna, or Kelli Green Garden Center in Marietta.

Jamie Rosenthal will happily come out to your garden for a free social distancing-friendly consultation. He will even bring along a sample of plants so you can get a better idea of what your dream garden might look like! To schedule a consultation reach out to him at jamie@rootsdownga.com.
