Does your pet have fleas or ticks?

When is flea and tick season?
There is no real “season” for either fleas or ticks. The climate in the area where the dogs live determines how prolific the fleas and ticks are for that “season.”  With the rain and warm temperatures this year in Georgia, flea and tick season will start early and stay late.

How can you tell if your pet has fleas or ticks?
The symptoms can vary depending on if they are allergic to the flea saliva. An animal that is not allergic may not itch if infested with fleas. On the other hand, an animal that is highly allergic to the flea saliva may itch and scratch excessively after only one flea bite. Most animals that have fleas will either have a black pepper substance on their fur, or they will be scratching or chewing at the back end of their body.

What problems can fleas and ticks cause?
When fleas are feeding, they are injecting saliva into the skin. These salivary proteins are often allergenic so animals end up with allergy-like symptoms. The most common skin disease of dogs and cats is called flea allergy dermatitis, where they bite and scratch and lose their hair. Fleas can also transmit tapeworms to our pets. With ticks, there are 15 or more tick-transmitted diseases that our pets can get. There is Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and more.

What are the best ways to prevent fleas and ticks in your pets?
We recommend treating the yard with nematodes (they work better than chemicals; natural pyrethrums or diatomaceous earth can also be used.) Next, bathe your pet with an herbal flea and tick shampoo containing citrus oils such as Neem. Remember that fleas and ticks do not die upon contact with shampoo. Rather, the shampoo works over time. This is why we suggest leaving the shampoo on for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing. Pay special attention to the area between the toes and around the ears since ticks love to hide here!

What is the minimum age you can use flea and tick treatments on puppies and kittens?
Speak with your veterinarian before treating your puppies for parasites. Puppies under six weeks old should not be treated with harsh chemicals. Dawn dishwashing detergent is a wonderful alternative to harsh chemicals and kills both active fleas and their eggs. Ticks should be physically removed and properly disposed of to ensure re-infestation does not occur.
